Los Angeles Times Carolina A. Miranda column

Nov. 27--It's been six months since I joined the team here at the L.A. Times and I'm thankful for a whole lot of things: that I get to write about art, design, architecture and the occasional rock band. But also that you all have taken the time to read the High Low. For that, I am quite grateful.

In the spirit of the holiday, I leave you with this pre-Columbian turkey whistle, produced in Colima, on the west coast of Mexico, sometime between 200 BC and AD 500. It's part of the permanent collection at the L.A. County Museum of Art.

It's a whimsical piece. And a reminder that even the smallest gestures have the power to transcend culture, time and language.
