Lorry drivers whose vehicles overturned on A1 in hot water after ignoring road closure

High winds have brought travel chaos across parts of Edinburgh and the Lothians today, with gusts of nearly 70 mph in places.

The gales saw the A1, from Old Craighall to the English border, shut to high-sided vehicles for safety reasons.

However, this didn't stop some drivers from choosing to ignore police warnings as two lorries blocked the route after overturning.

One lorry overturned at the Thorntonloch junction, while the other was near Thistly Cross roundabout in East Lothian - both at around 12pm.

Police Scotland's Road Policing Unit took to Twitter this evening (7 January) sharing that the drivers were in hot water over the incidents.

A statement from the unit read: "'Closed to all high sided vehicles' means ALL high sided vehicles, laden or otherwise."

The lorry drivers, a 47-year-old man and 36-year-old man, have been reported to the procurator fiscal, as well as the Traffic Commissioner, who oversees the licensing and regulation of drivers operating heavy goods vehicles, buses and coaches.

A Police Scotland spokesperson told Edinburgh Live : "We received report of an overturned lorry on the A1 southbound at the Bellhaven junction shortly after 12.00pm on Tuesday, 7 January. A 47-year-old man has been reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

"We received report of an overturned lorry on the A1 at the Thorntonloch Beach junction around 12.20pm on Tuesday, 7 January. A 36-year-old man has been reported to the Procurator Fiscal."
