Lorry driver fighting for life after 'being struck by own vehicle'

A lorry driver is continuing to fight for his life after it's believed he was struck by his own vehicle.

Officers were called just before 1.50am on Wednesday, following reports a driver of a HGV was injured on the carriageway close to junction 7 of the M62 at Rainhill.

It is believed the driver was struck by his own vehicle and he suffered serious leg injuries, before the vehicle was involved in a crash with the nearside barrier.

No other vehicles are thought to be involved, police said.

The driver was rushed to hospital and on Wednesday his condition was described as 'critical' with life-long injuries.

The ECHO approached Merseyside Police for an update on Thursday on the man's condition and it is understood he remains fighting for his life.

An investigation into the incident is currently underway and the M62 was initially closed on Wednesday to allow investigative work to be carried out.

Sergeant Steve Smith from the Matrix Roads Policing Unit said on Wednesday: “We are currently working to establish what has taken place in the lead up to this incident.

"I would ask anyone who was travelling along the M62 close to junction 7 in the early hours of Wednesday morning who saw the vehicle or witnessed anything to contact us.

“We are also appealing for anyone with dash cam footage which could assist our investigation to get in touch.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information is asked to call our Matrix Roads Policing Unit on (0151) 777 5747, email SCIU@merseyside.police.uk or DM @MerPolCC on Twitter quoting reference 0052 of November 24.
