Lorraine Kelly Says Spitting Image Ruined Paddington Bear

Lorraine Kelly didn’t hold back during Monday’s show when she got a first look at the brand new Spitting Image reboot, and let’s just say, she was far from impressed especially when it came to how Paddington Bear was portrayed.

Lorraine and showbiz correspondent Russell Myers were chatting about the upcoming return of the legendary puppet satire series, which originally aired from the 1980s through to the mid-90s. Now, it’s being revived for a modern audience under the title Spitting Image Presents The Rest is Bulls*, and it’s heading to YouTube instead of traditional telly.

Things took a turn when they watched a teaser clip from the new show, featuring puppet versions of Prince Harry and none other than Paddington Bear, sitting together in a mock podcast studio. It was all very tongue-in-cheek typical Spitting Image but Lorraine’s reaction was absolutely priceless, reported the Daily Record.

“Can I just say, never mind Prince Harry, thanks very much, how dare they do that to Paddington Bear?!” she exclaimed, clearly stunned. “What are they doing?! He looks deranged. No, you can’t do that to Paddington Bear, I draw the line, I draw the line.”

And when the clip continued to roll, she covered her eyes in mock horror and pleaded, “Don’t show me that anymore, that’s traumatised me.”

The puppet sketch shows Prince Harry talking to Paddington about his morning routine, saying with a straight face, “Well, Pads, an early start’s important, so my butler Perkins gets up at 5am and does a 10k for me, then it’s a session with my accountability coach.” He adds, “I think it’s important to be honest and transparent. I haven’t told Megs about it yet.”

Paddington though not quite his usual charming self in puppet form follows up by asking if Harry has a Netflix account. Harry’s puppet responds, “Ya, it’s got $9 million in it.”

Lorraine, reacting to the skit’s cheeky portrayal of the Duke of Sussex, admitted, “Oh, that’s a bit unkind!” and looked more than a little uneasy at the direction the satire had taken.

The revived series doesn’t seem to be shying away from controversy, and it’s already stirring strong reactions before even launching. A teaser for the new version says it’s perfect for those “wanting to laugh in the face of these anxiety inducing, squeaky bum times of global conflict, unhinged world leaders and megalomaniac FinTech bosses.”

They’re not exactly holding back either. “The (latex) gloves are off and it’s not pulling any punches. This isn’t just satire. It’s a no holds barred up-to-the-minute assault on the world of politics, pop culture and media control.”

While fans of the original may be eager to see Spitting Image back in action, it’s safe to say not everyone is thrilled with the new direction — especially not Lorraine, who’s still trying to forget that image of poor Paddington gone rogue.
