Loose Women's Ruth Langsford predicts 'hate' from viewers as panel call for ban

Ruth Langsford braced herself for 'hate' from younger Loose Women viewers on Monday, over a discussion she led oncalls to ban mobile phones in schools.

As the ITV lunchtime discussion show began a new week, Ruth was back at the helm to join colleagues Brenda Edwards, Coleen Nolan and Janet Street-Porter, with things kicking off with a topic that gained a lot of coverage over the weekend, whether or not Harry and Meghan should come to King Charles' coronation.

After mulling over the ramifications of their decision either way and reacting to news that artists had turned down the chance to perform at the coronation concert, the Loose Women panel then moved onto address reports of protests by school pupils in a various parts of the country.

Videos of the protests, some which have been described as 'riots,' have made their way onto social media, prompting Gavin Williamson, Former Secretary of State for Education, to call for mobile phones to be banned in school to stop the riots being documented on apps like TikTok.

Coleen said she 'totally agreed' with a proposed ban, commenting: "They don't need to have their phone; whatever age they are, once they are in that school building, they should not have their phone," suggesting that pupils should be made to leave their phones in a locker and then pick them up at the end of the school day.

Giving her take, Brenda said she thought schools should be able to 'block the signal' so pupils' phones don't work in lessons, with Ruth replying: "If you say 'put your phones away' and then the child is seen with a phone, you should say 'right you're in detention now' and take the phone away."

As well as the panel debating the issue, Ruth opened up the discussion to viewers at home, with a poll running on whether phones should be banned in school. The result was pretty conclusive, with 70% of those voting agreeing that there should be a ban, prompting Coleen to react: "Good for you."

But Ruth quickly forecast that not everyone would be as happy as Coleen with the result, saying: "All the kids will be hating us," before Janet quipped: "It's a rare occasion we agree with Gavin Williamson!"
