LOOK: MSU basketball considered one of unluckiest teams so far this season

As they say, sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.

It’s been a rough start to the 2023-24 season for Michigan State basketball and apparently, luck could be one of the most notable factors for the Spartans poor start. KenPom ratings system has a statistic metric in place to track luck — which Michigan State ranks near the bottom nationally at No. 357 out of 362 teams.

Here’s a breakdown of the luck rating from KenPom:

“KenPom defines this as a measure of the deviation between a team’s actual winning percentage and what one would expect from its game-by-game efficiencies. Essentially, a team involved in a lot of close games should not win (or lose) all of them. Those that do will be viewed as lucky (or unlucky)”

Michigan State got back to their winning ways in a much-needed blowout win of Baylor on Saturday, and will now look to make it two straight wins on Monday against Oakland. Michigan State is 5-5 overall this year.

So, maybe things aren’t as bad as it seems for Michigan State basketball as luck typically will change back in your favor at some point. We’ll see if that happens on Monday against Oakland.
