Longstanding medical center in Lexington sees a new purpose

A facility with a long history of providing medical care for children is carrying on with that focus. A ribbon cutting Tuesday in Lexington recognized the startup of "Kentucky Children’s Richmond Road."

Four specialty pediatric clinics are situated within the newly renovated, 25,000 square foot facility. The services are found at the former Shriners Hospital location. Carol Steltencamp is external chief medical officer for UK Healthcare.

“Kids aren’t just little adults. Their medical needs are different. And they require additional attention,” said Steltencamp

Dr. Scottie Day is physician-in-chief for Kentucky Children’s Hospital. Day said the clinics focus on complex care, developmental pediatrics, and physical medicine and rehabilitation.

“It’s not gonna be just a broken bone, no offense to my orthopedic colleagues, but it is about supporting them for a lifetime in a multidisciplinary team. It’s the NICU graduate program,” said Day.

The NICU clinic is a site for babies and young children with special medical needs.

Stephanie Nurnberg is the mother of an autistic son Ty. She said it will accommodate families who currently shuttle all over the city.

“Coming back to the same place. They don’t have to go to three and four different places. It’s all in one place,” said Nurnberg.

The new clinics will share space with Easterseals Bluegrass, a non-profit that provides services and care to adults and children with special needs. Funding for the facility renovation and expansion of services was made possible in part through a donation of community partners of Children Miracle Network Hospitals.
