Longford village celebrates as 20 piglets born to first-time mother

A rural Irish village is celebrating after a whopping 20 piglets were born to a first-time mother pig.

The little animals were delivered in Moyne, Co Longford between 5am and 8am on Thursday, July 16, RTE News reports.

It is believed to be one of the highest number of births ever recorded in the area.

The piglets were born to one of two sows bought by an ag-sci student, Ronan Bleakley, during lockdown - the second is also due to give birth soon.

Ronan told RTE: "I’m absolutely delighted.

"All 20 have survived and are in good health.

"We are giving them plenty of care and TLC.

"Nobody has ever seen a sow deliver such a high number in this area and young and old are coming to inspect the piglets for themselves."

Ronan said his grandmother, Mary Joe Gray, has taken the weakest of the litter to look after it,

She said "all of my grandchildren are spoiling him rotten".

Ronan’s mother Geraldine, who runs Moyne Cross Store and post office, added the family were already preparing for the second birthing.
