Long Eaton tea room closes - but will re-open with a 19-year-old at the helm

A tea room which closed last week will be back in business soon with a 19-year-old at the helm.

Waitress Ellie Spurr will be opening The Wonky Teapot, selling home-made cakes, pastries, pies, biscuits, lunches and a specialty afternoon tea.

The cafe will replace Carriages, a 1940s themed vintage tea room, in Station Street, which had been there since April 2018.

The teenager had been working for three years at Pelgrave's Restaurant next door when the premises, owned by the same people, became vacant.

"My bosses Jen and Chris Pelgrave asked if I'd be interested in starting up my own business there. I'm really excited. Not many 19-year-olds are given such a great opportunity, so after some thought I accepted.

"There's a lot of work to be done but I'm aiming for The Wonky Teapot to be open within the next two to three weeks, so it's all hands on deck."

Ellie, who makes the cakes herself, is planning a pastel and white colour scheme and a new kitchen will be fitted.

Gluten-free and vegan options will be sale and Ellie is busy deciding on the final menus, including a festive one for December.

As well as day-to-day trading the tea room will also be available for private bookings such as birthday parties and pamper events.

"The next couple of weeks will be hectic but I'm really looking forward to opening up and hope everyone in Long Eaton will come and support the new business," said Ellie.
