London weather: Sunshine followed by heavy rain for late May bank holiday weekend

Londoners will see sun this Bank Holiday weekend, forecasters predict - but it will be followed by rain.

The Met Office said a “typical springtime mix” of weather was likely for the UK over the long weekend, with sunshine, showers and some longer spells of rain.

The heavy rain earlier this week has since subsided, with London and the south east of England seeing a dry, sunny day on Friday, and highs of 19C.

Saturday will also see dry, sunny weather, forecasters predict, with the capital set to bask in highs of 23C.

Met Office forecasters said many areas in the south of the country will see “good periods of sunshine”.

However, rain is set to return on Sunday, due to a change in the UK’s weather patterns.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Mark Sidaway said: “The Bank Holiday weekend will see some sunny spells and it will feel quite pleasant in the sunshine for many on Saturday in particular.”

“Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday will likely see a return to sunshine and showers. Low pressure to the west is likely to push fronts into the UK on Sunday, these tending to break up and turn more showery in nature as they do so.

“We are likely to see some heavy, possibly thundery showers on both days, but there should still be some dry spells in between, and in any sunshine it will feel pleasantly warm.”

London is set for highs of 19C on Sunday, while Bank Holiday Monday, which will be cloudy, will see highs of 17C.

Going into the next week, it should be likely “mostly dry” on Tuesday, with some brightness and temperatures near average.
