London Tube strikes LIVE: Severe disruption hits network with travel nightmare for Heathrow passengers

London Underground drivers have gone on strike again causing fresh disruption for millions of commuters.

The 24-hour strike by members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) began at midnight and follows a similar walkout on Tuesday.

As many as six Tube lines have been fully or partly suspended so far today.

Transport for London (TfL) has warned of no service on the Circle line, Piccadilly line, and Metropolitan line between Baker Street and Aldgate and the Central line between White City and Liverpool Street.

There are major problems for passengers travelling to and from Heathrow Airport as a points failure has led to the suspension of the Elizabeth line to the airport and severe delays to the Heathrow Express.

The strikes come after last-ditch talks failed to resolve a dispute over a voluntary, compressed four-day week.

The RMT says more talks are expected next week.

Tuesday’s walkout caused a 41% drop in Tube journeys, while the Elizabeth line saw a 19% rise in usage.

Tube lines to close early

15:38 , Matt Watts

Due to the shortage of drivers on the network due to the strike action, Tube passengers are being warned not to try and travel after 9pm.

While some lines are not operating at all, most are operating currently with severe delays.

But because of the lack of drivers the whole network is expected to grind to a halt early.

So passengers are being advised not to attempt to use any line after 9pm this evening.

RMT lead - Further strikes 'inevitable' if terms are not renegotiated

15:04 , Tom Place

Today’s strike action is the last that is currently scheduled - but RMT’s London lead has said that future strikes could occur if negotiations remain at an impasse.

Speaking to the Metro, Jared Wood said another strike would be a matter for RMT representatives and the union’s national executive if a resolution could not be reached.

Mr Wood said: “We will get everyone together and we’ll have a discussion about what the next steps are. In the meantime, we would hope to have met the company again to see if there’s any shift in their position.

“But at the moment, there is no indication at the last meeting that they were prepared to negotiate the terms. And if that continued to be their position, then I’m afraid further action will be inevitable.

He added that further strike action would be “under immediate consideration” if the terms of the proposal were not renegotiated.

More Tube drivers at work than on Tuesday

12:35 , Tom Place

More Tube drivers have come to work on Thursday, the second day of the RMT strike this week, than on the first on Tuesday.

The gradual drift back to work of more drivers suggests that the industrial action by the RMT may not be as strongly supported as previous walkouts.

On Tuesday, just under 60% of drivers turned up to work, with the figure for Thursday expected to be a couple of percentage points higher.

In the April walkouts, the turnout rate was 57%.

Just over half of Tube drivers are members of the Aslef train drivers' union which is not on strike.

But more RMT drivers are also believed to be turning up for their shifts.

A Transport for London source told The Standard: "More Tube drivers came to work today than on Tuesday.

"There is less support for the strikes than previously.”

The strike is over reforms which the RMT has branded a "fake" four-day week.

However, Aslef is backing the voluntary four-day week which it has stressed offers drivers the best working conditions on the mainline rail network.

Union rep 'complained iPads being supplied by TfL too small to watch Netflix'

09:39 , Tom Place

A union representative allegedly complained that work iPads being supplied to Tube drivers were “too small to watch Netflix” on.

Reforms to bring in a four-day week for Underground drivers, who earn around £74,000 a year, have been discussed on several rail forums.

On one of them, an ex-conductor who is now in middle management, posted: “Honestly, as much as I’m for unions, sometimes the reps just don’t help themselves.

“Rep at a recent meeting to give drivers tablets complained that the screen was too small to watch Netflix on, so they should be given bigger ones. Unreal stuff.”

The RMT is advising other union members to use the Tube on strike days.

Why are the strikes taking place today?

07:02 , Tom Place

Members of the RMT union have gone on strike today after last-minute talks between the RMT and London Underground officials failed to reach a breakthrough.

Drivers belonging to Aslef are not taking part in the strike, meaning most Tube lines are expected to remain running, although services are likely to be reduced.

The RMT is arguing that the new working conditions deal proposed by TfL is a “fake” four-day week, claiming it amounts to five days' work compressed into four.

Tube strikes to have 'major' impact on hospitality sector

Wednesday 3 June 2026 09:40 , Tom Place

Industry chiefs have warned that the strike action this week will have a major impact on the hospitality sector, as customers seek to cancel their bookings and struggle to make their seats at the theatre.

Michael Kill, CEO of the Night Time Industries Association (NTIA), said: "Businesses across the capital rely heavily on office workers, commuters, visitors and tourists travelling into central London, and any disruption to the transport network has an immediate and measurable impact on footfall, trade and consumer confidence.

“For many hospitality businesses, particularly independent operators, the loss of customers caused by transport disruption is simply unaffordable in the current economic climate.

The Queens Theatre in London (PA Archive)

He continued: “What is particularly concerning is the prospect of further strike action extending into the remainder of the week and the weekend. Hospitality businesses plan and staff their operations around expected demand, with weekends representing some of the most important trading periods of the week.

“Continued uncertainty not only affects daily revenue but also impacts bookings, events, staffing and the wider visitor economy. London's hospitality and night-time economy is one of the city's greatest economic and cultural assets, supporting hundreds of thousands of jobs and generating billions of pounds in economic activity. It is also a key part of the visitor experience for both domestic and international tourists.

“We fully recognise the importance of constructive industrial relations, but we urgently call on all parties to reach a resolution.”

Tube strikes impacting visual impaired people, says leading sight loss charity

Wednesday 3 June 2026 09:30 , Tom Place

The UK’s leading charity for sight loss has said that the Tube strikes have raised additional challenges for people with vision impairment.

Guide Dogs raised concerns over the danger posed by e-bikes, particularly when parked incorrectly or in large groups.

People with sight loss cannot always see if they can safely squeeze past, and often the alternative is to step into the road around it, said the charity.

Clive Wood, of Guide Dogs, said the strikes created additional challenges for people with a vision impairment, as changes to usual routes and travel patterns make getting around more difficult.

Hr said: “Tube closures can lead to increased traffic, busier pavements, and more crowded public spaces and buses.”

He said many e-bikes and scooters were poorly parked and blocked pavements, posing risks for pedestrians with sight loss.

“For some, these factors may make journeys feel unpredictable or unsafe, and may lead them to avoid travelling altogether, limiting their independence,” he added.

“We’re asking commuters to remember that while trains may stop, the need for accessibility doesn’t. A small act like moving a hire bike or giving up a space or a seat can be the difference between a safe journey and a dangerous one for a person with sight loss.”

Commuters in London are being hit by fresh wave of disruption as Tube strikes disrupt the capital’s transport network once again.

Members of the RMT union will strike on Thursday, June 4 after last-minute talks between the RMT and London Underground officials failed to reach a breakthrough.

Drivers belonging to Aslef are not taking part in the strike, meaning most Tube lines are expected to remain running, although services are likely to be reduced.

The Overground, Elizabeth line and DLR will still be running, but services are expected to be very busy, with crowding likely throughout the day.

Voi e-bikes (Voi)

Christina Moe Gjerde, Vice President of Northern Europe at Voi, expects demand to surge again during this week’s walkouts.

She said: “With Tube strikes already disrupting journeys across the capital, whether you are hopping on an e-bike for the first time or are already a regular rider, we are making it easier for people to keep moving and choose micromobility for their everyday journeys.

“The popularity of e-bikes and e-scooters also shows why Government and city leaders need to back the growing micromobility sector. TfL need to use its new devolved powers to deliver pan-London licensing for e-bikes and e-scooters and finally create a joined up network that works for Londoners and operators alike.”

"We respect the right to strike - but the scale and frequency of disruption is now causing disproportionate damage to the wider economy and to businesses of all sizes.

"Many of our members argue essential services should be required to maintain minimum service levels, especially during peak hours."

"We did agree together that talks would continue next week, but unfortunately, the RMT made clear to us yesterday they had made the decision to go ahead with both days this week.

"We are available for talks. We'd talk today, or we'd talk tomorrow, but they made clear, unfortunately, that both of these days will be going ahead this week."
