TfL says buses on route 108 are faster now Silvertown Tunnel has opened
08:59 , Nuray BulbulAccording to Transport for London, since the Silvertown Tunnel opened, buses on route 108 are operating more quickly, resulting in shorter wait times for passengers.
The information was made public after an ITV News London investigation revealed that the new tunnel's cycling shuttle bus was having trouble drawing passengers; on Monday morning, not a single person used it for over an hour.
In the week the tunnel opened, the "excess wait time" for a 108—the amount of time passengers must wait past the scheduled wait time for a bus—was 1.15 minutes, down 23 per cent from 1.51 minutes in the same week the previous year, according to preliminary data from the mayor's transport agency. For Easter in both years, schools were off.
The only route that uses the Blackwall Tunnel, which is adjacent to the Silvertown Tunnel, is the 108, which connects Lewisham and Stratford International. Congestion at its older neighbour was alleviated by the construction of the new crossing.
According to TfL, buses on the 108 were operating at 9.08 mph the week before the Silvertown Tunnel opened and 10.24 mph four weeks later, which was a little faster than planned. The quicker speeds will also have been influenced by the construction of roadworks in Lewisham town centre during this period.

More 20mph roads likely for London
08:39 , Nuray BulbulMore London roads may have their speed limits lowered to 20 mph after studies found that they reduced crashes and injuries to bicycles and pedestrians.
Due to Transport for London's implementation of the lower restriction on its "Red Routes" network of major roads and the expansion of borough-wide 20 mph zones, more than half of the capital's highways have been restricted to 20 mph since 2023.
TfL-commissioned research on the safety advantages of 20 mph has now approved greater speed reductions, particularly as there was no proof that 20 mph limits exacerbated traffic.
When 20 mph zones were implemented on borough roads, it was discovered that there were 35 per cent fewer collisions and 36 per cent fewer fatalities.

Anti-car councils in London 'undermining public trust'
Tuesday 20 May 2025 09:23 , Nuray BulbulIt has come to light that London councils that impose anti-car policies on drivers are spending thousands on staff cabs.
Cycling and environmental NGOs have criticised the capital's local authorities for squandering enormous amounts of tax dollars on minicabs and drivers.
In the last three years, Ealing Council, which proclaimed a climate emergency in 2019, has spent at least £30,000 on taxis.
However, because the West London authority declined to disclose cabs that would have been reported as "other business expenses," the actual sum is probably much higher.
