London toddler, 2, dies after broken down car hit on A1

A two-year-old boy has died and five people left seriously injured after their car broke down and was hit by another vehicle on a busy dual carriageway.

The toddler, from London, was inside a Toyota Auris that had stopped on the A1 near Peterborough.

A Volkswagen Touran smashed into them in the live northbound lane at around 6.20pm on Saturday.

Five others inside the Toyota, two adults and three children, were rushed to Peterborough City Hospital.

Paramedics took the boy there in a critical condition, but he sadly died.

The driver of the VW, a man from Peterborough, suffered only minor injuries.

Cambridgeshire Police said the 64-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He has since been released on bail until March 20.

The force called for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage of the crash past the Stibbington junction to come forward.

The five people seriously injured were also from the capital.

Sergeant David Mcllwhan said: “Our thoughts are with the parents and family of this young child who has tragically lost his life in this collision.

“The family is being supported by specialist family liaison officers.

“I would appeal for anyone who witnessed the collision or has dashcam footage but was unable to stop at the scene to get in touch.”

Anyone with information about the collision should report to police online, quoting incident 401 of December 20.
