Loch Lomond to host introduction to rugby event after award win

Loch Lomond Rugby Club are set to host an introduction to rugby event next month, having been one of just eight clubs from across the country to earn an RBS award.

As well as a £1000 grant, the RBS Star Club Award means that they will receive a visit from a current Scotland international at their event, which is set to take place on August 10 and 11.

Work is already under way in preparation for the weekend, with the club keen to welcome anyone of any age and ability with an interest in getting into the sport.

Speaking to the Lennox Herald about the plans, Kirstie Evans, a member of Lomond’s fundraising team said: “The west coast of Scotland is very football orientated, and one of the things I put forward in the application was that in Dumbarton and Alexandria there are a lot of areas where kids just automatically fall into football, maybe without thinking of rugby.

“What we’re trying to show is that it’s a real family sport, my son didn’t particularly enjoy football and he wasn’t always picked, but in rugby it’s very, very different.

“No matter your skill level you’ll always get a game, everyone’s involved and team work is so important, that’s what we’re going to try and get across on the day.”

“There’s no glory in rugby, it’s not about who scores the try, it’s about everybody that makes that try happen - especially at the Junior level where there’s a real team, family environment. It’s not all about always having the best players on the pitch. It’s about having fun, learning a new skill and just generally being part of something amazing.”

Despite being home to a number of football sides, Lomond remain Dumbarton and the Vale’s only rugby club - and they are optimistic that, that could make them appealing to any potential sponsors looking to reach a new audience, with the club representing the area throughout the west of Scotland.

They are also keen to hear from those who could help out on the day of the event, with anyone interested in helping to raise the profile of rugby in the area urged to contact the club via their Facebook page.
