Locals tip-off police to tourists visiting village during lockdown

The counties surround Bristol are full of beautiful, picturesque villages which are well worth day-tripping to.

But during a nationwide lockdown is not the time to visit them.

While the majority people have followed lockdown rules and only travelled when absolutely essential, others have pushed the boundaries.

Day-trippers have been pulled over trying to drive from Bristol to "see the beach at Tenby", while one family was caught 225 miles from home after a four-hour drive.

Bourton-on-the-Water is one Cotswolds village which has still seen an influx of tourists visit during lockdown, so much so that sharp-eyed locals tipped off police, Gloucestershire Live reports.

Cotswolds police received reports that there were tourists in Bourton-on-the-Water, which usually opens its arms as well as its shops, cafes and attraction to visitors from far and wide.

So the Neighbourhood Police Team sent out three officers on foot to make sure those in the town were abiding by the regulations.

Not all were and 22 warnings were issued.

In Bristol, police community support officers had to patrol the harbourside after concerns were raised about a pub selling takeaway alcohol.

Pictures showed crowds of people gathering on the harbourside, while there was also concern about a group of people gathered outside The Oldbury Court Inn, in North Bristol. The pub said the group was made up of people helping with its refurbishment, saying it was only serving takeaway food and not alcohol.

There were also issues in Hotwells, with crowds gathering in a pub's beer garden leaving passers by "astounded and appalled".

The news comes as the 'Stay Home' message appeared to be dropped from the Government in place of 'Stay Alert'.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is due to address the nation at 7pm tonight where he is expected to explain the latest social distancing advice.
