A loaded handgun and a silencer were found by gardai in a wooded area in Dublin yesterday evening.
Officers from Finglas and Blanchardstown investigating organised crime in Northwest Dublin uncovered the deadly weapon while searching a wooded area off Waterville Road, Dublin 15.
The Makarov handgun was fitted with a silencer and loaded with seven bullets, gardai revealed.
A spokesperson for An Garda Siochana said the gun has now been sent for forensic and ballistic examination.
Searches in the area are continuing and enquiries are ongoing.
