Llanelli's annual fireworks night at Parc y Scarlets has been cancelled

Bosses at Parc y  Scarlets have confirmed that the annual bonfire and fireworks night will not be going ahead this year.

The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and current government restrictions in place in Llanelli means that the stadium has taken the decision to cancel the popular event which attracts thousands of visitors to the rugby ground every year.

The event is the latest in a long line of celebrations that have been cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic including Llanelli's Christmas carnival which was cancelled for the first time in its 42-year history.

The decision comes little more than a week after Llanelli was put on Wales' first 'town-level lockdown. '

The temporary restrictions were introduced on Saturday, September 26, in a bid to halt the spread of the growing number of cases in the town.

Last week, council leader Emlyn Doyle praised the people of Llanelli for adhering to the new lockdown restrictions and measures are said to be reviewed every two weeks.

Residents are also being urged to get tested if they are experiencing symptoms and testing centres are operating in the Ty Nant centre in Trostre, the Carmarthen showground and in Parc y Scarlet's car park B.

Parts of the stadium have also been used as a temporary field hospital over the course of the pandemic but luckily no patients have been admitted. 'Y Barn' at Parc y Scarlets is also one of Wales' field hospitals that is being retained in case it is needed.

Carmarthen has also seen its fireworks night at the town park cancelled as well as its Christmas light switch on celebrations and reindeer parade.

Scarlets venue general manager Carrie Gillam said: "Unfortunately, in view of the current climate and Welsh government restrictions in place regarding Covid-19 we will not be hosting our annual fireworks display at Parc y Scarlets this year.

"We hope to be back with the event in 2021, bringing you some fantastic acts and entertainment on what is always a great night.”
