A man was left 'livid' after his in-laws refused to allow him to sleep next to his wife while staying in their home and asked him to use the sofa instead. The husband took to Reddit to reveal that he initially thought his wife's father was joking but after realising he was being serious, he took off and stayed in a nearby hotel.
The following morning, his wife rang to inform him that his in-laws were furious he had left but were not willing to apologise and demanded he sleep on the sofa for the remainder of the trip, the Mirror reports. However, the man said he would not be apologising to keep the peace after being told he wasn't 'welcome back in the house' if he refused to return there to sleep.
In a post to the online forum, he wrote: "The in-laws invited us to come visit and stay with them for a few days and we took them up on the offer. We flew in yesterday, and everything went well.
"Things went south at the end of the night when it was made clear that they didn't want me sharing a bed with my wife while in their home, and that they expected me to sleep on the sofa. After arguing back and forth for a bit, I decided to leave and book a hotel.
"I told my wife she didn't have to come with me, she chose to stay and I said I'd come back the next day." He explained that the next morning on the phone he told his wife that he was willing to apologise if her parents acknowledged that their rule was unreasonable.

However, it was clear that his in-laws were not happy with the compromise and ordered him to stay on the sofa. He added: "If I don't agree to this, I'm not welcome back in the house. I'm pretty livid at this point - I told her that there's absolutely no chance that I will do that, and I am no longer willing to offer any sort of apology."
After the incident, his wife's sister got involved in the situation and urged him to just deal with it and not make a huge fuss as their dad is just 'like that'. In an update to the post, the man revealed that he had gone away on trip and invited his wife and her sisters along, knowing that his father-in-law will be furious but believes they should not buckle under pressure from him.
In response to the shocking post, Reddit users flooded to the comments to support the man as they criticised his in-law's 'stupid' rules. One replied: "Your in-laws are abhorrent hosts. It's their house, their rules and their rules are stupid.
"Rather than fighting a pointless battle, you set a clear and valid boundary, and they chose to take offense to it." Another person wrote: "The fact that the whole family is telling you to just grab your ankles to keep the peace - that tells me a lot about that family dynamic."
