Liverpool weather: exceptional heat and "oppressively warm" nights coming

"Exceptional" heat is forecast over the weekend, as an Amber Extreme heat warning has been issued by the Met Office.

Today it will be rather cloudy, with scattered showers possible. Forecasters say that into the afternoon sunny spells will develop and from there on out, a heat wave will hit the country.

Across Merseyside, the heat will begin to rise on Saturday, with the mercury rising to 25C. On Sunday the heat warning comes into place and temperatures could hit 30C.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Tony Wardle said: "Maximum temperatures have been well above average almost everywhere in the UK this week, the exception perhaps being the Western and Northern Isles of Scotland. Following a return to nearer average, locally rather cool temperatures over the next few days, the hot weather looks likely to steadily ramp up once again this weekend, peaking early next week.

"From Sunday, but more likely Monday and Tuesday, peak maximum temperatures are likely be in excess of 35C, especially across central, southern and eastern England, with a chance of some locations being even hotter. Elsewhere, maxima will generally range from high 20s to low 30s of Celsius.

"This, coupled with overnight minima not falling below 20C in many locations, has considerable potential to cause widespread societal impacts, which is behind the issue of an Amber Extreme heat warning." Dr Agostinho Sousa, Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection at UKHSA, said: "Heat-health alerts have now been issued to the majority of the country, with temperatures set to remain consistently high throughout the duration of this week.

"Most of us can enjoy the hot weather when it arrives, but it is important to keep yourself hydrated and to find shade where possible when UV rays are strongest, between 11am and 3pm. If you have vulnerable family, friends and neighbours, make sure they are aware of how they can keep themselves protected from the warm weather."
