Liverpool vs PSG LIVE: Arne Slot sweats over Hugo Ekitike injury update after Champions League exit

Ousmane Dembele scored a brace as holders Paris Saint-Germain dumped Liverpool out of the Champions League with a disciplined second-leg performance at Anfield.

The Reds were looking to mount a historic comeback but they failed to gain control early on, with PSG threatening as Ousmane Dembele blasted a sitter over the bar from seven yards.

Things went from bad to worse early on as Hugo Ekitike was forced off, though his replacement Mo Salah almost created the opener as his cross was turned goalwards by Milos Kerkez. Matvei Safonov made a great save, with captain Marquinhos producing a superb last-ditch block to stop Virgil van Dijk tapping in as both sides went in level at half-time.

But while PSG looked comfortable at the break they were quickly under pressure in the second half, especially as Alexis Mac Alliter darted in to win a penalty. Anfield was suddenly filled with hope but it was to be short-lived, with the initial decision overturned despite obvious contact in a decision that will bring more questions around VAR.

And it only got worse from there as PSG capitalised on the space left behind and Dembele wrapped up the tie, the Ballon d’Or holder firing in from the edge of the area to put the tie beyond Liverpool before adding a second late on to ensure the holders march into the semi-finals, where they’ll face either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich in a blockbuster tie.

The stark reality facing Liverpool after PSG cause Champions League deja vu

22:35 , Richard Jolly

Déjà vu all over again for Liverpool, eliminated by the French champions for a second successive season, but this this time without the drama of penalties or the sense of what might have been. A Paris rematch brought the same scoreline as last week, another 2-0 win. Ousmane Dembele, who got an Anfield winner last season, added a brace. Compared to last year, the margin of victory was bigger as Paris Saint-Germain secured a semi-final against Real Madrid or, more probably, Bayern Munich. This trophy may remain in their grasp for another year.

Liverpool can reflect on the damage done in Paris last week though the broader conclusion might be that, after £450m of spending, they have slipped further away from the European elite. They finished third in the league phase this year but they have rarely looked plausible winners of the competition. PSG, 11th in a large league table, are in the last four, their blend of defiant defending, electric attacking and midfield finesse looking them a class apart from the English champions.

Pundits claim Liverpool are now ‘underdogs’ for Merseyside derby

07:00 , Chris Wilson

Former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler has claimed that Liverpool could be underdogs for this weekend’s Merseyside derby against Everton after the Reds were dumped out of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain.

Arne Slot’s side were hoping for a historic European comeback as they welcomed PSG trailing 2-0 from the first leg, but instead they offered up another disjointed performance as a brace from Ousmane Dembele sent the holders through 4-0 on aggregate.

It means the Reds have lost four of their last five games in all competitions following the 4-0 demolition at the hands of Manchester City in the FA Cup and the loss to Brighton in the league before the international break.

Liverpool’s Hugo Ekitike stretchered off against PSG in huge blow to World Cup hopes

06:00 , Chris Wilson

Hugo Ekitike will fear for his World Cup after being stretchered off during Liverpool’s Champions League quarter-final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

Ekitike went down off the ball holding his ankle after suffering a suspected Achilles injury and appeared in some agony.

Liverpool doctors were quick to signal to the bench that the Frenchman wouldn’t be able to continue and that he would require a stretcher to be taken off.

Pundits blast controversial VAR penalty call that cost Liverpool dearly in Champions League

05:00 , Chris Wilson

Liverpool could not produce another famous European comeback at Anfield as they were knocked out of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain - but had their second-half penalty not been controversially overturned, things could have been very different.

The hosts were trailing 2-0 on aggregate but still had the second leg finely poised at 0-0, knowing the pendulum could swing heavily in their favour if they made PSG’s net bulge.

It looked like they had secured the golden opportunity to do just that as Alexis Mac Allister went down under the challenge of Willian Pacho to earn Liverpool a penalty on 64 minutes.

How seven Premier League teams could qualify for the Champions League after clinching fifth spot

03:00 , Chris Wilson

The Premier League could boast seven clubs in next season’s Champions League if all the right pieces fall into place – but now we know five will be guaranteed.

The extra place was sealed after Arsenal emerged 1-0 victors at Sporting in their quarter-final first leg, with Kai Havertz snatching a late winner in Lisbon.

It is the second consecutive year that the Premier League has earned an additional spot, with the English top flight at the pinnacle of the European Performance Standings.

Atletico Madrid survive barrage from 10-man Barcelona to reach Champions League semi-finals

02:00 , Chris Wilson

Atletico Madrid reached their first Champions League semi-final in nine years on Tuesday, squeezing past Barcelona 3-2 on aggregate despite a nerve-racking 2-1 home defeat that had the Metropolitano holding its breath until the final whistle.

Diego Simeone's side had done much of the heavy lifting with a 2-0 win at the Camp Nou in the first leg, and that cushion proved just enough to withstand an early Barca blitz as the visitors struck twice in the first half to level the tie.

Lamine Yamal capitalised on a Clement Lenglet error to open the scoring in the fourth minute, finishing neatly past goalkeeper Juan Musso after Ferran Torres set him up.

Fowler: Liverpool 'none the wiser in terms of the tactics'

23:30 , Chris Wilson

“I don't think PSG were actually brilliant tonight, but when they needed to up their game, they did it,” says Robbie Fowler on Amazon Prime.

“Liverpool huffed and puffed but they were still none the wiser in terms of the tactics.

“[When the penalty was given] PSG were on the ropes a bit, Liverpool threw a few balls into the box and caused a little bit of chaos. That was a real game-changer.

“Did I think it was a penalty? It was a soft one, but I don't think VAR should change it.”

Enrique: 'It was an intense match'

23:10 , Chris Wilson

Luis Enrique is clearly pleased with his side’s performance.

“It was an intense match between two teams who play good football. It’s an honour to play against the Liverpool of Arne Slot,” he says.

“First half I think we controlled the match, second half it was a different story. It was difficult but we scored two goals.

“If you want to win these kinds of matches you have to defend with intensity and as a team. We showed that we are ready to play when we have the ball and without the ball.

“It’s a different story because last year everyone felt we couldn’t win, and now everybody knows we are the champions. But we need to grow, and we think we can,” he added.

Slot: 'I am completely not surprised'

23:00 , Chris Wilson

“We got much more than we deserved last week by only losing 2-0, like last season. Also the same as last season today we got much less than we deserved. We should have won but it is from the quality of them why they don't concede,” says Liverpool boss Arne Slot at full-time.

“If you look at our season I am completely not surprised [about the overturned penalty] because so many decisions have gone against us. For me it is quite simple, if the referee did not give a penalty the VAR would never have intervened.

“As I said I don't think it is a surprise this season, not just the Champions League but also in the Premier League many decisions have gone against us.

“We couldn't score a goal, we had many chances.”

On Hugo Ekitike's injury, he adds: "Not too good. We could all see it didn't look good. Let's wait and see what it will be. In the second half he went home and I haven't seen him yet.

"As it seems to be, losing a player is something we have had many times this season but it is especially hard for him because you never want to be injured, especially at this time of the season."

Dembele: 'We found a way to win'

22:52 , Chris Wilson

Ousmane Dembele has the following to say on Amazon Prime in a brief interview:

“Very happy to be able to win the game. It was difficult but we found a way to win, and we’re delighted.

“Really happy with two brilliant goals. The first was great work from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and the second was Bradley Barcola with brilliant work, and I’m really happy with both of them.

“I think we’re at the same time and hopefully we can win our semi-final and go on and win it [all],” he adds as he finishes.

In the night’s other game, Atletico Madrid had enough to sneak through in their quarter-final tie against Barcelona.

Diego Simeone’s side lost 2-1 on the night but they sneak through 3-2 on aggregate to set up a semi-final against either Arsenal or Sporting CP.

'We have to give our all'

22:44 , Chris Wilson

Here’s more from Konate:

On the performance and rest of the season: “Many things happened and we don't have to forget that. The game today meant a lot of things because against PSG, who are a bit better than last season, to make a performance like that we have to build from that and realise how good we can be.

“It is minimum standard for Liverpool to play Champions League. We have six games left and we have to give all in those six games,” he added.

(Getty)

Konate reacts

22:39 , Chris Wilson

Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate is first to speak to Amazon Prime:

“Today we created many chances and I think on the pitch we were the better team. It was a little bit unfair it was like season, we had many chances but could not score and they had one or two chances and score,” he explains.

“Last season we had a penalty like that. For me it was a clear penalty and was just behind the referee but he did not blow the whistle and we have to deal with that. If we got the penalty and score it would be completely different."

On Hugo Ekitike's injury, he adds: "I think it is bad. I don't know, I have heard many things, I have no word to talk about that because with the World Cup coming it is very, very hard for him and I send him my prayers."

Next up

22:30 , Chris Wilson

Liverpool’s attention turns back to the Premier League now, even if that is only in the hope that they can secure Champions League football for next season.

The Reds are currently well-placed to finish in the top five, with Slot’s side sitting in fifth but four points ahead of sixth-placed Chelsea.

Liverpool’s next game comes against Everton in a Merseyside derby on Sunday, 19 April.

'PSG were far superior'

22:20 , Chris Wilson

“You have to say PSG over the two legs were far superior,” says former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock on BBC 5 Live.

“Down in front of us you can see what it means to PSG. It was a difficult game for them, but they stood tall. Matvey Safonov made some crucial saves. They rode their luck, but overall it was the right result over the two legs.”

Liverpool were much better than last week but the damage had been done in Paris, and the Reds live to rue that insipid performance last week.

Will it be enough to ease pressure on Arne Slot? Only time will tell as the battle to finish in the top five in the Premier Leagur heats up.

'PSG navigated that first half with few alarms'

The first half comes to an end without anything else of note and both teams head in level at the break.

It’s been an entertaining half at Anfield and it’s a surprise that it’s ended level, as both sides missed huge chances.

Dembele will feel like he should have put PSG ahead, while at the other end Marquinhos did superbly well to prevent a certain goal as van Dijk’s eyes lit up.

It means the tie is still finely poised as we enter the second half, though it’ll be PSG who are the happier of the two sides – and the holders will feel they can punish the Reds in the second half is things stay the same.

His clearance falls straight to a PSG shirt though, and the Georgian does well to pull off a good stop as he scrambled back towards his goal line.

Liverpool are roared forward early on but Szoboszlai’s pass is a poor one.

PSG go up the other end and Doue finds Dembele in the box, though his attempted squared pass across goal is intercepted.

Surprise formation

If the team selection was a surprise, the formation may be, too, given the personnel. It looks like a 4-2-3-1 with Ekitike on the right and Mac Allister as a No 10.

Fowler: 'It doesn't make sense'

19:51 , Chris Wilson

Robbie Fowler is perplexed at Slot’s comments on Isak. The former Liverpool striker had this to say on Amazon Prime:

“I can't believe he's done that. He has come out and more or less given the tactic away, straight away. If he changes after 45 minutes, there is going to be a change in the tactics, formation or dynamics of Liverpool. It doesn't make sense for me.”

Slot reveals Isak will see limited minutes

19:45 , Chris Wilson

Liverpool boss Arne Slot has revealed that Alexander Isak “will not be able to play much more than 45 minutes” this evening as the striker continues his return from injury.

“The thinking is that we need to score goals and there are goals in these players. They are two target men, two players we can play in to. As you might not know, Isak will not be able to play much more than 45 minutes - with the possibility of extra time, it makes sense for me to start him.

“We need to do a few things well, but I don't think it's that much about tactics this time. You have to match their intensity off the ball,” explained the Liverpool boss.

On the state of play before kick-off, he added: “I have felt a lift already when we arrived. We will probably feel it more when we go out for the warm-up and even more when we go out to play. We need to be at our best and our fans to be at their best."

The logic of Alexander Isak's starting berth

19:43 , Richard Jolly at Anfield

The logic behind starting Alexander Isak is that Liverpool are not sure how long he can play so, with the possibility of extra time, Arne Slot thinks it is better he plays from the off, rather than potentially having to substitute a substitute.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot: We know we need an exceptional performance against PSG

19:40 , Chris Wilson

Arne Slot accepts Liverpool can be nothing short of “exceptional” if they are to add to the list of magical European nights at Anfield against Paris St Germain on Tuesday.

Liverpool failed to register a shot on target and were outclassed in the French capital last week as European champions PSG claimed a 2-0 win in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.

But the Reds have staged several unlikely European comebacks, most recently overturning a 3-0 deficit against Barcelona by winning 4-0 on Merseyside en route to lifting the Champions League trophy in 2019.

Match stats

19:33 , Chris Wilson

Liverpool have lost four games in the Champions League this season, which is their joint-most in a single campaign. The last time they lost four was in 2018/19, though they went on to win the trophy that season!

Interestingly for the Reds, Florian Wirtz has created more chances from open play than any other player in the competition this season, while Dominik Szoboszlai has created more chances from set-pieces than any other player.

Head-to-head

19:27 , Chris Wilson

These two sides have met just five times previously in European competition, with PSG winning two and Liverpool winning three.

The most notable match-up between the two came last season in the round of 16, when table-topping Liverpool secured a dramatic late win courtesy of Harvey Elliott before PSG reversed that result and eventually won on penalties at Anfield.

Will we see another positive result for the holders tonight, or can Liverpool mount another historic European comeback?

The key decisions Arne Slot must make with Liverpool requiring another famous European comeback

19:20 , Chris Wilson

Arne Slot referenced his distinctive look. “I tend to think of myself that my brains are not the worst part of my head,” said the Liverpool head coach. “The hair is not growing a lot but I can remember a lot.” If it means Slot can remember three games against Paris Saint-Germain, from the smash-and-grab win in the Parc des Princes last season to the one-sided defeat in the French capital last week, that brainpower will be required to devise a blueprint to eliminate the holders from the Champions League.

Slot has to be psychologist as well as strategist. He started off by reminding his players Liverpool were only 2-0 down. “It felt completely different,” he admitted. A side who failed to muster a shot on target in Paris need a minimum of two goals, and probably more. Slot has also turned mathematician in his attempts to instil optimism.

PSG team news

19:05 , Chris Wilson

Luis Enrique has named an unchanged side from last week at the parc des Princes. PSG did not have a game at the weekend and so the Spaniard had no new injury concerns, so it is no surprise to see the settled midfield trio of Warren Zaire-Emery, Vitinha and Joao Neves starting.

In attack, Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia keep their places despite the return of Bradley Barcola, while Ousmane Dembele once again leads the attack.

Liverpool team news

19:00 , Chris Wilson

Arne Slot has made five changes to the side that beat Fulham 2-0 at Anfield at the weekend. Only one change is in defence, where Milos Kerkez replaces Andy Robertson.

In midfield. Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister come in ahead of Curtis Jones and Mo Salah, with the latter dropped to the bench and Dominik Szobozlai presumably moved into a more attacking role.

Elsewhere, Rio Ngomoha and Cody Gakpo come out of the attack in favour of Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak.

Line-ups

PSG XI: Safonov; Hakimi, Pacho, Marquinhos, Mendes; Vitinha, Neves, Zaire-Emery; Doue, Dembele, Kvaratskhelia

'Time to repay some of that huge transfer fee?'

18:51 , Richard Jolly at Anfield

Arne Slot springs a surprise by giving Alexander Isak his first start of 2026, following two brief cameos. The £125m man comes in, though Mohamed Salah and Rio Ngumoha do not start, as Liverpool need goals. Time to repay some of that huge transfer fee?

Liverpool line-up

18:47 , Chris Wilson

Liverpool XI: Mamardashvili; Frimpong, Konate, van Dijk, Kerkez; Gravenberch, Mac Allister; Ekitike, Szoboszlai, Wirtz; Isak.

Subs: Woodman, Misciur, Gomez, Salah, Chiesa, Jones, Gakpo, Robertson, Nyoni, Nallo, Ngumoha.

Team news

18:40 , Chris Wilson

The line-ups could be released at any point from within the next five minutes, so here’s a reminder of the early team news for both sides...

Curtis Jones went off on Saturday holding his groin but trained ahead of the second leg. Alisson Becker remains out injured while Hugo Ekitike, Ryan Gravenberch and Milos Kerkez are likely to return after being rested at the weekend.

As for PSG, Luis Enrique’s side did not have a game this weekend but Bradley Barcola has returned to the visiting squad.

What has Slot said?

18:30 , Chris Wilson

Liverpool boss Arne Slot said he knows his side need to be exceptional this evening if they are to turn this tie around at Anfield.

“There is a belief that we can do special things tomorrow but we need to be very, very, very special tomorrow to achieve that because we are playing against the champions of Europe,” explained the Dutchman.

“The approach is not so different for tomorrow than it was in Paris – for the people who know me, I never put out a team and tell them to go to a low block for 90 minutes.

“I think we have to find the perfect balance between being offensive. But to be offensive you need to have the ball and to get the ball back.

“I think we have to be much, much, much better than we were last week. Their players are experienced players, they have experienced Anfield a year ago, so they think that they know what's coming up. So, I can only hope that our fans can find an extra gear compared to last season, which I'd argue if it's possible because the atmosphere last season was unbelievable,” he added.
