Liverpool v Sunderland live: Arne Slot denied back-to-back wins as Reds held by Premier League high-flyers

Arne Slot was denied back-to-back wins as Premier League high-flyers Sunderland held Liverpool to a draw at Anfield.

While a 2-0 win at West Ham on the weekend hinted at a return to Liverpool’s old selves, they struggled to bring the game to the Black Cats and could have been behind in the first half after Trai Hume’s effort from range went through the hands of Alisson, only to bounce off the crossbar.

Omar Alderete hit the woodwork again after the break before Sunderland found the breakthrough thanks to a deflected effort from Chemsdine Talbi, a goal that stemmed from Virgil van Dijk’s poor defensive play.

Florian Wirtz thought he’d bagged his first Premier League goal to equalise in the 81st minute - only to see it ruled a Nordi Mukiele own goal - but the Reds could not find a winner in the time that remained, with their winless run at home stretching to three.

Against Liverpool’s £100m men, Sunderland proved themselves as the smartest spenders

23:04 , Will Castle

Federico Chiesa has started to forge a reputation as Liverpool’s latest super-sub because of his capacity to deliver crucial contributions in the opposition’s penalty area. As he cemented it, it was with injury-time heroics in his own. Liverpool were spared a 10th defeat in 14 games, a third in a row at home and a particularly embarrassing concession by a man who had been sent on to score a winner.

When Wilson Isidor’s 94th-minute shot beat Alisson, Chiesa turned rescuer. The last man back, his goal-line clearance was another illustration that the Italian never gives up. For that, Liverpool could be grateful. Having showed too little ambition at the start and too much at the end, they were carved open by one ball forward from goalkeeper Robin Roefs. Chasing a game, they at least claimed a point from a losing position for the first time this season. Yet while they ended up with a first draw of the campaign, an unwillingness to settle for it almost cost them.

Because really it was Sunderland who were denied victory; it would have been their first at Anfield since 1983 and when Chemsdine Talbi, scorer of a decider against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, put them ahead, he seemed on course for a notable double, while Sunderland were set for fourth place. As it was, they can still look down on Liverpool in the table and rue aspects of a night in which they hit the woodwork in both halves and when both scorers were Sunderland players.

Richard Jolly reports from Anfield:

Curtis Jones: 'It's one of those nights again'

22:47 , Will Castle

"We've got the guys in the team that can play, score and assist,” Jones said.

“We have asked for more aggressiveness. Flo ran and tackled and it's just a shame that it goes down as an own goal.

"We are playing against a team that sat back a bit. It's one of those nights again."

FULL-TIME! Liverpool 1-1 Sunderland

22:12 , Will Castle

Honours even! What an addition Sunderland have been to this division.

Liverpool 1-1 Sunderland

22:12 , Will Castle

90+9 mins: A poorly cleared header is brilliantly brought down by Ekitike to set him up to shoot... but he fires over.

And that’s that!

Liverpool 1-1 Sunderland

22:11 , Will Castle

90+8 mins: Liverpool have it in their corner. Is there time for one more chance?

Liverpool 1-1 Sunderland

22:10 , Will Castle

90+7 mins: It’s a woeful corner from Szoboszlai, failing to beat the first man.

He retrieves it on the edge of the box and his second delivery goes through everyone. Goal kick.

Liverpool 1-1 Sunderland

22:09 , Will Castle

90+6 mins: Liverpool have won a corner. We’re about to enter the seventh minute of added time.

Liverpool 1-1 Sunderland

22:08 , Will Castle

90+4 mins: OFF THE LINE! OH. MY. WORD.

Liverpool have been the ones camped out in the opposition final third, but after Roefs collected a looping ball, he caught the Reds sleeping and with one kick sent Isidor in on goal.

He gets around the goalkeeper but Chiesa tracks back and is there to deny him on the line.

What drama!

Liverpool 1-1 Sunderland

22:04 , Will Castle

90 mins: After the first corner only led to an unsuccessful penalty appeal, the second saw Van Dijk’s goalwards header blocked by his own man in Kerkez, before Salah’s effort was blocked.

SEVEN minutes added on. Sunderland are making another change - O’Nien is back as he enters the fray for Talbi.

Liverpool 1-1 Sunderland

22:02 , Will Castle

88 mins: Liverpool have ramped up the pressure. They’re peppering the Sunderland box and have a corner.

Liverpool 1-1 Sunderland

22:00 , Will Castle

85 mins: Anfield has been lifted by the idea that Wirtz has scored his first Premier League goal. Unfortunately, it’s now gone down as a Mukiele own goal.

In the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t matter. Liverpool are going for the win and Chiesa has been brought on for Isak.

GOAL! Liverpool 1-1 Sunderland (Wirtz, 81')

21:55 , Will Castle

Florian Wirtz breaks his Premier League duck!

After Joe Gomez’s aggression helps Liverpool regain possession on the edge of the box, the German dances past two before seeing his deflected effort fly past Roefs in net.

It’s just the slice of like Wirtz - and Liverpool - needed.

Liverpool 0-1 Sunderland

21:54 , Will Castle

79 mins: Szoboszlai has had two decent openings to whip in from deep over the last few minutes, but both have been wasted.

One goes over everyone, the other into Roefs’ hands.

Liverpool 0-1 Sunderland

21:53 , Will Castle

78 mins: That was Mac Allister’s last contribution. He’s substituted for Ekitike, joining forces with Isak up top.

Le Bris has also made a change - Geertruida on for Le Fee, a defensive switch.

Liverpool 0-1 Sunderland

21:51 , Will Castle

76 mins: Liverpool are being frustrated by the constant stoppages as Sunderland keep winning fouls.

Mac Allister just slammed a shot well over the bar from long range. The Premier League champions have not been very good today.

Liverpool 0-1 Sunderland

21:44 , Will Castle

70 mins: A reminder that Alexander Isak has been playing since the first whistle. I forgot and I think you might have too.

Arne Slot needs to bring Hugo Ekitike on.

GOAL! Liverpool 0-1 Sunderland (Talbi, 67')

21:41 , Will Castle

Sunderland lead and it’s nothing short of what they deserve!

It’s shocking defending from Liverpool’s captain, with Virgil van Dijk giving the ball away sloppily before pulling out his best ‘aura defending’ and failing to close down Talbi, who is bearing down on the box.

He then turns his back as the winger lets fly, with the shot deflecting off of him and beyond Alisson.

'Slot's new right flank didn't last long'

21:40 , Will Castle

Here’s Richard Jolly inside Anfield:

“So Slot's new right flank didn't last long. Szoboszlai is back in the middle of midfield and Gomez has been subbed as Liverpool look for a winner. Not that, realistically, it had looked a long-term partnership on the right.”

Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

21:38 , Will Castle

65 mins: Salah gets the chance to shoot but he doesn’t catch it properly and it’s simple for Roefs.

Another Liverpool change now - Gomez, on a booking, is off for Jones.

Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

21:36 , Will Castle

63 mins: Le Bris is making an attacking change. Isidor is coming on for Brobbey, whose first Sunderland start comes to an end.

Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

21:35 , Will Castle

61 mins: OFF THE POST! Alderete comes a post-widths from giving Sunderland the lead.

He leaps above everyone to meet the corner but can’t quite get the direction to divert his powerful header in at the near post.

Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

21:34 , Will Castle

59 mins: Salah’s introduction has injected energy into this game.

Liverpool are pressing higher and getting into the box more often, even if it hasn’t led to much so far. It’s better.

That said, they need to be careful. After a period of pressure, a Konate mistake allows Brobbey to break. The Frenchman is lucky the ball doesn’t run right for Brobbey and then Talbi.

Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

21:29 , Will Castle

55 mins: Down the left flank, Reinildo knocks the ball beyond Gomez who promptly hacks him down to concede a foul and earn a stonewall booking.

He joins Le Fee in the book, who saw yellow a mere minute earlier.

The Frenchman delivers the free-kick but it goes over everyone and the crossbar.

'Game transformed by Salah's arrival'

21:27 , Will Castle

Here’s Richard Jolly at Anfield:

“The game has been transformed by Salah's arrival, even if he hasn't yet achieved that much. There is more energy and urgency, as well as rather more volume from the stands.”

Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

21:26 , Will Castle

52 mins: Brobbey looks to link up with Sadiki to send the latter through on goal but he’s sent flying by the challenge of Konate.

The Frenchman slides in and does get the ball, but there is an initial fear that the follow through may be troubling. Replays show all is fine - it’s just a sore one.

Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

21:23 , Will Castle

48 mins: Salah is immediately getting involved down that right-hand side - Wirtz has moved to the left while Szoboszlai is now central.

A dangerous-looking ball aims for the Egyptian at the back post but a Sunderland head intervenes.

BACK UNDERWAY! Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

21:19 , Will Castle

We are back underway at Anfield, and Mohamed Salah is on for Liverpool. Cody Gakpo makes way.

Around the grounds

21:18 , Will Castle

Before we get back underway, here are the scores on the doors from around the Premier League:

Arsenal 1-0 Brentford

Brighton 3-4 Aston Villa

Burnley 0-1 Burnley

Wolves 0-1 Nottingham Forest

Leeds 2-0 Chelsea

Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

Here comes Mo!

21:17 , Richard Jolly at Anfield

Here’s Richard Jolly inside Anfield:

“A rather dull first half in which Liverpool lacked ideas and creativity. Some would say there is an obvious answer to that on the bench. Will Slot turn to Mohamed Salah tonight? He will. Salah is putting his shirt on. He's coming on.”

HALF-TIME! Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

21:07 , Will Castle

That was Sunderland’s half despite the scoreline showing level terms.

Liverpool have been underwhelming again and Arne Slot will need to find a solution at half-time to start bringing this game to the Premier League’s high flyers.

That said, both sides have hit the woodwork with Trey Hume’s shot flying through the hands of Alisson and off the bar, before Alexis Mac Allister’s header clipped the outside of the post.

HALF-TIME! Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

21:02 , Will Castle

Goalless at the break.

Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

21:01 , Will Castle

45+1 mins: One minute added on. Sunderland corner coming in... and we nearly have a Jordan Pickford circa 2018 incident.

A looping shot threatens to fall under the Brazilian’s crossbar and he takes no chances by punching it out.

Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

21:00 , Will Castle

45 mins: OFF THE POST! So nearly an opener for the hosts as Mac Allister’s header clips the outside of the post.

Roefs was beaten. It would’ve been undeserved but that’s football.

Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

20:59 , Will Castle

44 mins: SAVE! Where would Liverpool be without Dominik Szoboszlai.

Liverpool finally get out of their own half and in the hope of creating something out of very little, he lets fly and forces a big save out of Roefs.

Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

20:58 , Will Castle

42 mins: Liverpool need half-time right now.

They’re almost being forced into a back five with Cody Gakpo playing left wing-back.

And when they have the ball, they’re play out from the back has been dismal.

Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

20:54 , Will Castle

38 mins: Nobody thought that Liverpool’s problems had been solved by beating a struggling West Ham. But once again, they have looked very uninspiring.

Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

20:48 , Will Castle

32 mins: OFF THE BAR! So nearly an absolute stunner from Hume!

The Northern Irishman lets fly from 25 yards out and it’s hit with so much power that it goes through Alisson’s hands and off the bar!

Alisson’s touch was enough - but had that gone in, it would’ve been a howler from the Brazilian.

Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

20:47 , Will Castle

30 mins: Another couple of Liverpool half-chances come and go.

Wirtz shows a bit of trickery to skip past his man on the byline before cutting it back, but his pass is blocked for a corner.

Then from the corner, Liverpool keep peppering crosses into the area before one reaches the back post, though Gakpo’s looping header is knocked back to nobody.

'Sunderland defensive strategy is making sense'

20:43 , Richard Jolly at Anfield

Here’s Richard Jolly inside Anfield:

“Sunderland are defending the width of the penalty box which, as Cody Gakpo looks to cut in from the left and Dominik Szoboszlai isn't a real right winger, makes sense and further limits the space for Florian Wirtz.”

Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

20:42 , Will Castle

26 mins: Liverpool are starting to go through the gears.

They work it nicely to Gakpo in the box, only for the Dutchman to botch his down-the-line pass to Robertson and knock it out for a goal-kick.

But moments later, they have another opening through Isak, who sees his effort well blocked.

Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

20:41 , Will Castle

23 mins: Has Wirtz just scored his first Anfield goal? For a second, Reds fans thought so.

The German drives towards the box and gets a slice of luck as the ball deflects over a Sunderland shirt, leaving him with just Roefs to beat.

On the stretch, he tries to prod the ball through the keeper’s leg and while it does ripple the net, it’s the side-netting.

A brief roar inside Anfield dissipates.

Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

20:36 , Will Castle

19 mins: Isak’s first moment inside the Sunderland box sees him blast high and wide, a bit like he did with his first shot against West Ham.

He’s getting heavily booed by the away fans for his links to Newcastle - ironic given the fact he gave their rivals one almighty headache during the summer and would receive the same reaction from Magpies supporters. Not a popular boy in the North East.

Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

20:34 , Will Castle

18 mins: Hume whips in a decent delivery from deep that is met at the back-post by a stretched leg, but despite initially keeping the ball in play, the spin on it eventually takes it over the byline.

Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

20:32 , Will Castle

16 mins: Liverpool have been trying to work it down the right but their crosses have come to little success so far, either being caught by Roefs or blocked entirely.

Sunderland try to break down the other end but Konate puts a stop to it - illegally, mind you - by bringing down Brobbey. Maybe lucky to escape a booking.

'Liverpool sloppy in possession'

20:29 , Richard Jolly at Anfield

Here’s Richard Jolly inside Anfield:

“Liverpool have been sloppy in possession too many times in these first 13 minutes. Sunderland are showing the confidence of a team who kick off ahead of them in the table. It has the feel of an even contest.”

Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

20:26 , Will Castle

9 mins: Liverpool haven’t been able to create much so far and their first shot at goal comes via a speculative effort from range.

That said, if you want anyone to be letting fly from 35 yards, Dominik Szoboszlai is up there. He catches it nicely and hits the target but it’s caught by Roefs.

Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

20:24 , Will Castle

Those are not happy eyes, are they Mo.

(Peter Byrne/PA Wire)
(Peter Byrne/PA Wire)

Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

20:23 , Will Castle

7 mins: Another opening for the visitors as Le Fee darts into the box and gets to the byline before trying to cut it back towards Brobbey.

He can’t get the direction on it and the ball rolls through to Alisson.

Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

20:20 , Will Castle

5 mins: Van Dijk looks to pass to Gakpo but sells the winger short, allowing Sunderland to break.

It’s shaky start by Liverpool, who are about to defend a Mukiele long throw.

Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

20:19 , Will Castle

3 mins: Crunching challenge from Van Dijk leaves Brobbey down and hurt - no foul is given, but Sunderland keep going and whip an inviting ball into the box.

There’s no-one to meet it. Maybe there would’ve been if Brobbey was on his feet.

KICK-OFF! Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

Once unthinkable, dropping Mohamed Salah could now save Liverpool’s season

19:53 , Richard Jolly

This feels even more relevant now. Could this really be the beginning of the end for Mohamed Salah at Liverpool?

A year on from saying he was ‘more out than in’ at Anfield in an infamous interview, Richard Jolly explores the possibility that the club’s talisman may finally need to be phased out:

Arne Slot reveals Mohamed Salah's reaction to being benched in back-to-back Liverpool games

19:40 , Will Castle

“We didn't have a long conversation, this time or before West Ham,” Slot told Sky Sports when probed on the 32-year-old’s reaction. “We spoke a lot after the Frankfurt game and now not as much as that time.

“I think he reacts like you want a top professional to react and that is he trained really hard and good the day after the West Ham game, trained good yesterday is really positive towards his teammates.

“In that sense, he's been an example for all these players when he played and now he's an example of how to react If you don't play.”

Slot reveals Salah’s reaction to being benched in back-to-back Liverpool games

How Liverpool got back to winning ways

19:27 , Will Castle

Liverpool come to Anfield without the bitter taste of defeat in their mouths - a rarity over the past couple of months.

Arne Slot was facing a doomsday scenario had he left West Ham with a 10th loss in 13 games on Sunday. Inspired in different ways by his £100m entities, his fight to survive at Liverpool will go on at least another gameweek.

Read our report from the London Stadium:

Arne Slot scaling a cliff face but Liverpool reprieve shows recovery possible

'There isn't much news - which constitutes quite big news'

19:28 , Richard Jolly at Anfield

Here’s Richard Jolly inside Anfield:

“The team news is that there isn't much news, which in turn constitutes quite big news. Arne Slot has swapped his left-backs, bringing in Andy Robertson for Milos Kerkez, but has made no other changes. Which, in turn, means Mohamed Salah is benched again, with Dominik Szoboszlai presumably starting on the right. Alexander Isak also stays in the team, along with Florian Wirtz.”

A lot can change in nine years

19:15 , Will Castle

It’s been nearly nine years since Liverpool and Sunderland last faced off against each other - and a lot has changed since then.

Sunderland have gone to the depths of League One and back in that time, while Liverpool have since ended a three-decade wait to win the Premier League title, before winning it again last year!

Yet despite experiencing such contrasting levels of success over the past near-decade, it’s Sunderland who start the night ahead of Liverpool in the table. Who’d have predicted this in August?

(Getty Images)

Brian Brobbey finally rewarded with a start

19:13 , Will Castle

Speaking of substitute benches, Brian Brobbey finally finds himself in the Sunderland starting XI as the Dutch striker is rewarded for his goal off the bench in the weekend’s comeback win over Bournemouth.

Trey Hume also comes back into the side, with Regis Le Bris making two changes from the Cherries triumph.

To bench or not to bench?

19:09 , Will Castle

That was the question. And that question has been answered emphatically by Arne Slot.

Mohamed Salah will take his place on the padded touchline seats for another Premier League game, this time in front of his home fans. That could be telling for where the Egyptian fits into Slot’s long-term plans.

Slot only makes one change from the side that beat West Ham on Sunday - Andy Robertson in for Milos Kerkez at left-back.

CONFIRMED TEAM NEWS - SALAH BENCHED AGAIN!

19:05 , Will Castle

Well, well, well. Mohamed Salah is benched for a second consecutive Premier League game.

Liverpool XI: Alisson; Gomez, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Mac Allister, Gravenberch; Szoboszlai, Wirtz, Gakpo; Isak.

Sunderland XI: Roefs, Hume, Mukiele, Ballard, Alderete, Reinildo; Talbi, Xhaka, Sadiki, Le Fee; Brobbey.

Closing in on team news

18:58 , Will Castle

Just a couple of minutes until we bring you the teams for tonight’s clash...

Any surprises in store?

When does Mohamed Salah go to AFCON and which Liverpool games will he miss?

18:55 , Will Castle

Mohamed Salah is set to depart for AFCON duty on 15 December, Arne Slot has confirmed. He will feature in Egypt's group stage games on 22 December against Zimbabwe, then they face South Africa on 26 December with the final match on 29 December against Angola before the knockout stage.

Across that time, he will miss the Premier League trip to Tottenham Hotspur on 20 December, a home game against Wolves on 27 December and more than likely the New Year's Day match at Anfield against Leeds United.

Should Egypt progress, then they would face a last 16 clash on 4/5 January, which would rule Salah out of the trip to Fulham on 4 January.

The Reds then face Arsenal on 8 January, with a potential quarter-final for Egypt on 9/10 January. The next match for Liverpool is on 10-12 January in the FA Cup third round proper, before Burnley at home on 17 January. Salah could miss all three games should Egypt progress into the latter stages, with the AFCON 2025 final in Rabat is on 18 January.

What Arne Slot had to say about the game management of key trio

18:42 , Will Castle

Liverpool’s lavish summer signings Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz are still not able to play three full matches in a short time frame, manager Arne Slot has admitted.

Isak and Wirtz – bought for £125m from Newcastle and £100m from Leverkusen respectively – have struggled to get up to speed in the Premier League this season, and have found themselves used sparingly by Slot.

Ahead of a busy run of fixtures leading into the festive period, which starts with the visit of high-flying Sunderland to Anfield on Wednesday night before Saturday’s trip to Leeds, Slot admitted the pair, as well as defender Joe Gomez, are still not fit enough to play successive full matches on weekends and in midweek.

“I think they are not able to play three 90 minutes in a week, that’s for sure,” Slot said. “I will have to see how they feel today and if they are ready to start again. All three are able to play in all three games if they don’t get an injury.”

Arne Slot says key duo ‘not able’ to play three full Liverpool games in a row

How Arne Slot fits Mohamed Salah into his long-term Liverpool plans

18:30 , Richard Jolly

After one of the more demoralising weeks of his eight years at Anfield, the good news for Mohamed Salah is that Arne Slot has not found his successor. The man who displaced Salah from his usual berth on Liverpool’s right flank at West Ham was a short-term solution, not the face of a new formula.

That may be what Dominik Szoboszlai wanted to hear, too, after he was pressed into service in his fourth different role of the season on Sunday. Salah, Slot admitted, was unhappy at being omitted. But a return to the team now would only be temporary, with the Africa Cup of Nations starting soon.

If Szoboszlai could be a Salah stand-in – for different reasons – then, Slot said: “I don’t see Dominik as a right-winger for the long-term future in this club. Dominik is a midfielder who could help us out as a full-back or as a winger if needed. I don’t expect to be in February and March and every single game Dominik is playing there.

Our man on the ground Richard Jolly delves into Mohamed Salah’s future at Liverpool:

How Arne Slot fits Mohamed Salah into his long-term Liverpool plans

Potential starting line-ups

18:20 , Flo Clifford

Liverpool XI: Alisson; Jones, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson; Mac Allister, Gravenberch; Salah, Szoboszlai, Wirtz; Ekitike.

Sunderland XI: Roefs; Hume, Mukiele, Ballard, Geertruida, Reinildo; Traore, Xhaka, Sadiki, Le Fee; Brobbey.

Team news

18:10 , Flo Clifford

Slot notably dropped Mohamed Salah for the win over West Ham and all eyes will be on whether the Egyptian is restored to the line-up, potentially to rest Dominik Szoboszlai.

The Reds manager also asserted that the trio of Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak and Joe Gomez are not fit enough to play three 90 minutes in a week, which could bring rotataion.

Sunderland are still without Dennis Cirkin, Leo Hjelde, Aji Alese and Habib Diarra through injuries, but there are no new issues for Le Bris to contend with. Brian Brobbey scored off the bench on Saturday so could be due a start.

Liverpool v Sunderland

17:50 , Flo Clifford

Arne Slot will hope to build up a head of steam with Liverpool back in winning ways as they take on high-flying Sunderland in the Premier League.

The Dutchman avoided what could have been a doomsday scenario as he prevented a 10th loss in 13 games by beating West Ham on Sunday.

However, Liverpool are now tasked with much tougher opposition in the form of the league’s surprise package, with the Black Cats having gone from relegation favourites to European contenders this season.

Regis Le Bris’ side are currently sixth in the table - a point ahead of Liverpool - and come to Anfield off the back of a stunning 3-2 comeback win over Bournemouth on the weekend.
