Liverpool v Aston Villa live: Result and final score as Gravenberch seals win in Premier League clash

Liverpool finally halted their dreadful losing run with a 2-0 Premier League victory over Aston Villa on Saturday to climb into third place in the table, as Mohamed Salah became the third player in Reds history to score 250 goals.

Under mounting pressure after four successive league losses -- and six in their last seven games across all competitions -- Arne Slot's men climbed to within seven points of league leaders Arsenal with 18 points. Villa fell to 11th in the table on 15 points.

Salah struck in first-half injury time, capitalising on a huge blunder from Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez who played the ball right into the path of Liverpool's talisman. Salah finished first time to the relief of the anxious Anfield crowd, and joined Roger Hunt and Ian Rush as the only players to score 250 goals for the Merseyside club.

Ryan Gravenberch doubled the home side's lead in the 58th minute when he blasted a shot from the top of the box that deflected off Pau Torres and in past Martinez.

Slot on Salah's form

05:30 , Lawrence Ostlere

“Mo scores, again, which is not a surprise to anyone I think. But I also liked that he was strong every time we played long balls towards him and he helped his team out defensively. This is the Mo that I, we, he himself want to see.”

Arne Slot speaks to TNT Sports

03:31 , Lawrence Ostlere

“What I liked most was that the players and the fans all felt the importance of the game – that this was the moment to show we are still there.

“We were ready for it today – against a team, by the way, that was in very, very good form. It’s a good result.

“The margins sre small in the Premier League, you see it in every game – it was the same today. We didn’t concede from a set-piece, which is very helpful if you want to win football matches, especially in the Premier League at the moment.”

More from Van Dijk

01:27 , Lawrence Ostlere

“Winning always feels good, keeping a clean sheet after forever felt good as well. But it's only a win, now it's about recovering and focusing on the next one.

"In possession we were good, we found the spare man. We decided they would press with two strikers, so our number six would be free at times if we played the ball quickly enough.

"We had good runs in behind, opportunities to score goals, and the defending as a team was good. That made a difference."

More from Van Dijk

Saturday 1 November 2025 23:26 , Lawrence Ostlere

"Now it's time to start working, never get too high or too low. We live in a world where everyone can have their own opinions on so many platforms and they know better. We have to stay away from that and focus on the hard work we are doing.

"Last season, we did some negative stuff but everything was all sunshine and rainbows everywhere. Now it sounds like we're going to be in a relegation battle. That's how it works in the world."

Salah’s 250th goal sinks Aston Villa to send Liverpool third

Saturday 1 November 2025 22:44 , Lawrence Ostlere

Richard Jolly writes from Anfield:

“Liverpool had reasons to dread the prospect of history being made at Anfield. Instead, they could celebrate it. Their slump was such that they were threatened with the prospect of a seventh defeat in eight games, a fate they have not suffered since 1926, the year of the birth of Queen Elizabeth II. It was more about Anfield’s beloved ‘Egyptian King’, however. Mohamed Salah became just the third player to reach 250 Liverpool goals, joining Ian Rush and Roger Hunt in a select club of Anfield greats.

The importance of a landmark strike stretched far beyond the statistical. Liverpool ended a run of four consecutive Premier League losses, banking their first points since September. They leapt to third in the table. That, Arne Slot may argue, is no crisis.”

Van Dijk speaking on TNT Sports

Saturday 1 November 2025 22:25 , Lawrence Ostlere

"Even in good times, you have to still keep going and don't take our foot off the gas. What I've noticed over the last few weeks is that there's a lot of noise that you have no control over and we have to deal with that as a team. Some of the takes are ridiculous, but you deal with it. Outside noise can reach certain players, but we stick together. We are not going out on the pitch to lose games or leave fans disappointed, we want to work our socks off and win games. But it's not a guarantee, the Premier League is the highest level.”

Salah speaks to TNT Sports

Saturday 1 November 2025 22:09 , Lawrence Ostlere

“I said from the beginning it’s a tricky season for us because we have a few new players. Very good signings but they need time to adapt, and we lost some good players as well. We just need time. I think we’ll be fine.

“It’s a great feeling to score goals and win trophies for such a big club. I don’t take it for granted. I’m so proud of the achievement [250 Liverpool goals].”

'Relief for Liverpool'

Saturday 1 November 2025 22:02 , Lawrence Ostlere

Richard Jolly reports from Anfield:

Saturday 1 November 2025 21:19 , Richard Jolly

'Terrific header'

Saturday 1 November 2025 20:46 , Richard Jolly

Richard Jolly at Anfield:

“Liverpool haven't scored the opening goal in a game since the Carabao Cup tie over Southampton. Briefly, they thought they had then but Ekitike was offside. It was a terrific header, though.”

'Villa look sharp'

Saturday 1 November 2025 20:25 , Richard Jolly

Here’s Richard Jolly at Anfield:

“Anfield is loud and lively so far and Liverpool have looked energetic. Slot's gamble of resting his regulars for the Carabao Cup was to keep them fresh for tonight. They have looked it. The problem for Liverpool is that Villa have looked sharp on the break and they have looked too easy to attack.”

Saturday 1 November 2025 20:06 , Lawrence Ostlere

Slot chasing first league point since September

Saturday 1 November 2025 19:51 , Richard Jolly

Here’s our correspondent Richard Jolly at Anfield:

“Arne Slot unsurprisingly drops most of his Carabao Cup team as he looks for a first league win – or point – since September. Only Andy Robertson and Alexis Mac Allister stay in the side, but there is still no place for Florian Wirtz. Villa, who – like Liverpool – can leap into the top three, bring in Evan Guessand for the injured Emi Buendia.”

Gravenberch returns to starting line-up

Saturday 1 November 2025 19:49 , Lawrence Ostlere

Steven Gerrard, speaking on TNT Sports, sings the praises of Ryan Gravenberch and what he brings to the midfield, not just on the ball but also off it, “putting out fires and stopping the counterattacks, which Liverpool have had some problems with this season ... and he adds another 6ft 1in player in the box on set-pieces.”

Gravenberch is back after a brief spell out with an ankle injury.

Arne Slot on leaving Wirtz on the bench

Saturday 1 November 2025 19:44 , Lawrence Ostlere

“We have so many players available, especially in midfield. These are the players we have chosen and I can tell you we will need more than 11 players tonight.”

Liverpool v Aston Villa

Saturday 1 November 2025 19:39 , Lawrence Ostlere

For all Liverpool’s troubles this season, they can jump up to second in the table with a victory of three goals tonight, and third with any other win. A big opportunity to get back on track.

Aston Villa are on the same points – 15 – and so can do exactly the same, of course.

Liverpool v Aston Villa – team news

So Liverpool make three changes: Andy Robertson, Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister start, replacing Milos Kerkez, Curtis Jones and Florian Wirtz.

Villa make one change: Evann Guessand replaces the injured Emi Buendia.

Elliott divides opinion but unhappy Villa move leaves no winners

Saturday 1 November 2025 19:22 , Lawrence Ostlere

Here’s Richard Jolly on the struggles of Aston Villa’s summer recruit from Liverpool:

Harvey Elliott will not play at Anfield on Saturday. Which, in its own way, could suit everyone. With a loanee ineligible, Liverpool are spared the possibility of being condemned to a seventh defeat in eight games by a player they discarded after their record spending spree. Unai Emery, meanwhile, will not face questions about why he has not picked a signing who, if his loan becomes permanent, will become Aston Villa’s biggest buy of 2026.

Elliott did not play at Anfield much last season, either. Not from the start, anyway. He began only five matches and just one, an FA Cup win over Accrington, on home soil. If the last few weeks may have made Liverpool far more nostalgic for the Jurgen Klopp era, Elliott may have felt such pangs for the recent past long before many another. He started 27 games in the German’s valedictory campaign. His tally of 53 appearances was the second highest in the squad (second only to Darwin Nunez, another since directed to the Anfield exit) and he chalked up 14 assists.

Elliott could seem the likeable lad who divides footballing opinion. He seemed part of Klopp’s legacy. He ended his England Under-21 career as the player of the tournament as Lee Carsley’s team retained their European Championships crown. And he has spent the last 16 months of his club career under Arne Slot and Emery, managers who do not seem to rate him; or not highly enough, anyway.

Villa have won their last four league matches and are one place behind Slot's team in the table, but level on points.

Liverpool then host LaLiga leaders Real Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday before travelling to fifth-place Manchester City on November 9.

The Merseyside team's troublesome start, which included an ugly fourth-round League Cup exit on Wednesday in a 3-0 defeat by Crystal Palace, comes despite the club spending £446m on new recruits in the close season.

However, Slot said he was pleased with his squad.

"We miss nothing," he said. "I am completely happy with the team and with all the quality that we have and I am also completely convinced by the strategy and the policy that we have, but not all of them have had a proper pre-season or have been injured.

"When three or four are injured you go back to 16 players," Slot added. "You have to keep them fit as we did last season... A few others have missed out on pre-season or had injuries during pre-season.

"It has been more difficult than last season to keep them all available. Maybe last season we were more lucky and now we are more unlucky. But, no excuses for our results before people say this.

Liverpool v Aston Villa

Saturday 1 November 2025 18:16 , Lawrence Ostlere

Liverpool head into Saturday's Premier League clash with Aston Villa desperate to halt a miserable run of six defeats in their last seven outings across all competitions, but manager Arne Slot faces a selection headache.

Injured striker Alexander Isak and goalkeeper Alisson have yet to return to training, and Slot told reporters on Friday he was "99.9% sure (they are) not in the squad on Saturday".

Midfielder Ryan Gravenberch could feature after training on Thursday in a bit of good news for Slot's reigning champions whose slump has them seven points behind league leaders Arsenal in seventh in the standings and facing a string of tough games.

"In the end phase of the injury, things can slow down a bit or things can go faster but Ryan trained with us yesterday and he will train with us today and then we will make the call whether he is able to start," Slot said.

Predicted line-ups

Saturday 1 November 2025 18:03 , Lawrence Ostlere

How to two sides could line up tonight...

Liverpool XI: Mamardashvili; Bradley, Konate, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Gravenberch, Szoboszlai; Salah, Wirtz, Gakpo; Ekitike.

Aston Villa XI: Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Torres, Digne; Onana, Kamara; Malen, Rogers, McGinn; Watkins.

Liverpool v Aston Villa – Team news

Saturday 1 November 2025 17:50 , Lawrence Ostlere

The game will come too soon for Liverpool duo Alexander Isak and Curtis Jones, who remain sidelined with injuries. A return could be in the offing for Ryan Gravenberch, however, who has been sidelined since the loss to Manchester United two weeks ago.

Aston Villa cannot call on the services of loanee Harvey Elliott due to the fact Liverpool are his parent club, though this likely won’t prove an issue to Unai Emery’s selection with the midfielder starved of minutes. Emiliano Buendia is also out with a foot injury.

Liverpool will bid to stop the rot after six losses in seven as they play host to Aston Villa in the Premier League.

Arne Slot’s faltering side succumbed to back-to-back Anfield defeats in midweek, with a much-changed XI convincingly dumped out of the Carabao Cup by bogey side Crystal Palace.

Having also lost at Brentford last weekend, it appears all progress made in the Champions League thrashing of Frankfurt has already been undone, with the Reds on a run of six straight defeats on English soil.

Villa, meanwhile, have experienced a polar opposite season to Liverpool’s so far, struggling to start before going on a rich vein of form. Unai Emery’s side are on a run of four straight wins in the league, including two over Manchester City and Tottenham.
