Liverpool urged to sign Harry Kane as Pep Guardiola makes Anfield point

Here is your Liverpool morning digest for Tuesday, April 13.

Do Liverpool need to target Kane signing?

Should Liverpool emerge successful in the race for the top four this season, they could land a double blow on one of their rivals, writes Theo Squires.

The Reds currently find themselves battling West Ham United, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and Everton in the battle for European qualification this season, with only one of the aforementioned sides set to compete in next season’s Champions League.

And while Jurgen Klopp’s side are by no means the favourites to come out on top in such a tight-fought battle, one of their rivals has a lot more to lose if they also miss out.

Reports in the Athletic on Saturday morning suggest Harry Kane will look to leave Tottenham this summer should Jose Mourinho’s men fail to qualify for the Champions League.

The 27-year-old, who is currently vying with Mohamed Salah to win this season’s Premier League Golden Boot, has been one of the English top-flight’s deadliest finishers over the past decade.

But despite scoring 217 goals in 328 games for Spurs, the England international is yet to win any silverware in his career to date.

The closest he has come has been picking up runners-up medals when losing to Liverpool in the 2019 Champions League final and Chelsea in the 2015 League Cup final.

Kane will have another chance to get his hand on a trophy later this month when Spurs face Man City in this year’s League Cup final.

But even if they emerge triumphant, that would not be enough for him to remain in North London.

The Athletic report that Kane is frustrated by a lack of trophies and concerned by the threat of a second successive season without Champions League football at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

And while he won’t make a decision about his future until the summer, he is prepared to tell Spurs bosses he wants to quit the club if they miss out on Champions League football.

Man City and Manchester United are both tipped as potential suitors for Kane if he follows through with his threat to quit, while the report adds that a move abroad cannot be ruled out.

But could Liverpool make a surprise move for the prolific striker should he become available?

Guardiola makes Liverpool point

Pep Guardiola has used Liverpool's 68-game unbeaten run at Anfield to bat away criticism of Man City following his side's surprise defeat to Leeds United on Saturday.

Despite playing the entirety of the second half against 10 men, the champions elect fell to a shock last-minute defeat against the newly-promoted side at the Etihad this weekend as Manchester United's own victory over Tottenham Hotspur narrowed their lead to 11 points.

Guardiola has highlighted exactly what both Man City and Liverpool have achieved when putting together such runs, insisting that such defeats only emphasise just how difficult such feats both were in the first place.

“When you see the last 27 or 28 games, we have won 26,” Guardiola said after his side's defeat. “You realise how difficult it is what we have done.

“When Liverpool lose a game at Anfield after two, three, four or five years, it shows how difficult it is for us to not lose a game after a very, very long time.

“So, in the Premier League, we must win. We need points, still because our opponent can win all their games.”
