Liverpool still in dark over FIFA Club World Cup in Qatar

Liverpool remain in the dark over their participation in the FIFA Club World Cup – leaving Jurgen Klopp unable to plan for the competition.

FIFA announced in early June the tournament would take place in Qatar in December, with there having previously been confusion over whether it had been cancelled as the governing body pressed on with plans for their expanded version due to start in 2021.

However, it soon emerged Liverpool had not received an official invite from FIFA to take part.

And with less than three weeks until the start of the Premier League season, that still remains the case.

While the venue of the Club World Cup has been finalised, very little else been made concrete.

New Champions league titles feature Liverpool lifting the trophy

The format of the tournament has yet to be confirmed, although previous editions would have seen Liverpool enter at the semi-final stage as Champions League holders.

There has also been no confirmation of the precise dates of the games, while even the competition rules are yet to be finalised.

It is believed FIFA have also not yet approached the Premier League with any official invite, with Liverpool's participation impacting on their domestic fixture schedule.

The competition traditionally takes place in the second and third weeks of December with the Champions League winners not playing their semi-final until the second midweek.

When Liverpool were last involved in 2005, they had to rearrange one Premier League game. The equivalent match this season would be the trip to West Ham United, presently scheduled for December 21.

Klopp is keen the Club World Cup – the only current major trophy Liverpool haven't won – doesn't overly impact on the priorities of the Premier League and Champions League.

But only until the precise details of the competition have been formalised can the Reds boss consider his options and the make-up of the squad he sends to Qatar.

Seven teams will take part in the Club World Cup in December, with Liverpool already joined by Monterrey of Mexico, New Caledonia side Hienghene Sport and Qatar's Al Sadd.
