Liverpool star who failed to make Champions League appearance left speechless by victory over Tottenham

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher basked in the best feeling of his life after joining Rhian Brewster in an exclusive Champions League club.

Kelleher was part of the 23-man squad as Liverpool earned their sixth European Cup with victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the final in Madrid on Saturday.

It was only the second time the 20-year-old Irishman had been on the Reds bench, where he sat alongside teenage striker Brewster.

And the duo have become the first Liverpool players in history to claim a European Cup winners' medal without having played a senior career game.

Goalkeeping duo Peter McDonnell in 1977 and Bob Bolder in 1984 both won the trophy with the Reds despite having not appeared for the club, but had played elsewhere earlier in their careers.

Kelleher joined Mignolet, first-choice Alisson Becker and goalkeeping coaches John Achterberg and Jack Robinson in lifting aloft the European Cup in front of the delighted Liverpool fans after the final whistle.

And the youngster said to RTE Sport: “I can’t describe to be honest. I can’t put it into words. I don’t know what to say. I’m speechless.

“It was unbelievable. The team has worked so hard during the year. They have produced some unbelievable performances. This is the least they deserve. I was just delighted really.

“It was nerve-wracking to be honest. It was probably easier playing because you’re not as nervous.”

Kelleher, who has progressed to Liverpool's under-23 side this season, added: “I was buzzing (after the first goal from Mohamed Salah). It was a great start to be fair. We did well throughout the game and defended well.

“Div(ock Origi) came up with a great finish so we got the win.

“It was unbelievable. It’s once in a lifetime. I’ve never experienced that. It’s probably the best feeling I've ever had.”
