Mohamed Salah surprise ranking for Ballon d'Or confirmed as Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski decision made

The winner of the 2021 Ballon d’Or has been announced, with Mohamed Salah’s place also decided.

The Liverpool forward was one of 30 nominees for the prestigious award, which was hosted for the first time since 2019 because of the pandemic.

Virgil van Dijk came close to winning the award the last time it was held two years ago, but was beaten by winner Lionel Messi and had to settle for runner up.

Salah was also nominated in 2019, but had to settle for a top five spot and it was a similar story for the Egyptian this year.
