Liverpool: Second signing of January transfer window confirmed as defender deal done

New signing: Arne Slot - (REUTERS)

Liverpool are set to land their second signing of the January transfer window.

The Reds have been active in the final few days of the window, with Monday’s deadline looming large.

Arne Slot’s side will land teenage defender Ifeanyi Ndukwe from Austria Vienna.

The Austrian club confirmed the deal on Monday evening, with Ndukwe, 17, moving to Anfield in the summer.

An agreement had been struck between the two teams earlier in January, but it is now official, with the Merseyside club able to welcome their latest signing at the end of the season.

“All formalities have been settled,” a statement read on Vienna’s social media.

“[Liverpool] has secured the option to sign centre-back and homegrown talent Ifeanyi Ndukwe in the upcoming summer transfer window.”

Now that Ndukwe’s move is confirmed, Liverpool have captured two young stars this month, with Mor Ndiaye, another 17-year-old central defender, who has joined the club from Amitie FC in his native Senegal.

Liverpool have found themselves incredibly thin on the ground in defence in recent weeks, with injury pile-ups causing Slot a real headache in his selections.

Joe Gomez was injured in the defeat at Bournemouth over the weekend, leaving the Reds with no senior central defenders as alternatives to first-choice pair Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk.

Konate has not featured in Liverpool’s last two games - at Marseille and Bournemouth - after the passing of his father.

Right-back Conor Bradley has been ruled out for the season with a serious knee injury, while Tottenham have an interest in signing Andy Robertson before the end of the transfer window.
