Virgil van Dijk joined captain Jordan Henderson in showing the respect between Liverpool and rivals Manchester City with messages of congratulations to Kevin De Bruyne.
The City midfielder was named PFA Players’ Player of the Year and succeeds Van Dijk (2019) and his Anfield team-mate Mohamed Salah (2018) to the award.
Taking to Twitter, the Dutchman wrote: Not a bad one to win I guess. Congratulations well deserved big man!”
Van Dijk’s sentiments echoed those of his club skipper Henderson who bagged this year’s FWA Footballer of the Year gong from the national press.
Hailing the Belgium international's recognition from his fellow professionals, Henderson said : “Congratulations to Kevin De Bruyne on winning the PFA Player of the Year award.
“Class act on and off the pitch. Well deserved.”
After lifting the Champions League the previous season, Henderson guided Liverpool to the UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and a first League Championship in 30 years in the 2019/20 season, playing 40 games in all competitions and scoring four goals.
Although De Bruyne had to make do with just a League Cup after the previous term’s domestic treble with City, personally he netted 16 times in 48 games.
