Liverpool's 'never change' message to girl, 11, laughed at for prom suit

People have thrown their support behind an 11-year-old girl after "cruel" parents laughed at her for wearing a suit to her primary school prom.

Mischa Parker's prom night was ruined when she overheard some of the other children's parents laughing and calling her "suit girl" over her prom outfit choice.

Ahead of the big night, Mischa was "really excited" about her smart black dinner jacket with matching trousers and bow tie that she picked out herself.

Mischa was so upset she called mum Tamara Auty, 33, and asked her to pick her up early from the party.

Tamara said all the family thought she looked great and described the incident as "disgusting."

Tamara, from Morley, Leeds, said: "When I was 11 I had no idea who I was, but Mischa has always known who she is and what she likes.

"I’d taken her shopping the day before and she was really excited trying it on. She was a bit nervous hoping nobody laughed at her.

"I just think that children should be allowed to express themselves - why should my daughter be made to feel bad about the way she likes to dress?

"Why try and knock a child down for that?"

Hundreds of ECHO readers commented their support for Mischa and spoke of how 'amazing' she looked and to 'keep smiling'.

Cathy Holland said: "I think she looks amazing!! I wore suits when I was little. Sending lots of love and please be yourself. It is others who have a problem."

Joanne Hyland said: "I think she looks lovely, she’s dressed how she feels comfortable and not stuck in a dress that she probably wouldn’t feel right in just to fit in. Shame on those parents who bullied this child to the point that she left early. I hope their children never experience another parent being cruel to them for no reason at all other than they are expressing their style in a different way. It’s ok to be different so never change to suit others."

Paul Smart said: "She looks great. So what if she wore a suit? However I think a boy wearing a dress would have got an even worse reception. I admire those that dare to be different."

Grace Fitzpatrick said: "How shocking is this. The girl has her own style and good for her to be unique. It's such a shame she was so upset and ruined her prom. People are so cruel at times, so sad you looked cool sweetheart don't be sad."

Tracey Anne said: "Mischa you look amazing, keep being you, and as hard as it is don't listen to nasty people, yes we all have opinions, but keep the nasty hurtful ones to yourselves and think how you would feel if you were on the other end. Keep smiling."
