Liverpool’s acting mayor encouraged people to stay vigilant about coronavirus as the city’s infection rate dropped below 20 cases per 100,000 people for the first time in months.
Wendy Simon thanked city residents for their adherence to lockdown restrictions and said the sustained fall in cases showed the importance of people’s actions.
Council figures put the city’s infection rate at 19.9 cases per 100,000 people
Councillor Simon urged people to adhere to coronavirus guidelines while enjoying a wider range of activities as restrictions ease.
Referring to Monday’s major easing in restrictions, which will see non-essential retail re-open and allow hospitality to reopen outside, she said it was vital people were still vigilant in following social distancing and other guidelines.

She said: “We’ve seen our numbers continue to come down, going just below 20 [cases per 100,000 people] yesterday which is fantastic.
“I’m sure Matt [Ashton] and the team and everybody here would echo me in saying that while that’s great news we all need to continue to stay vigilant.
“We need to make sure we follow the rules as the lockdown eases because I’m sure if we stay within those guidelines and people continue to get tested then and people continue to get vaccines then that easing of lockdown measures can continue.
“I know that’s something we all look forward to.”
Councillor Simon said work would take place in the coming weeks to more specifically analyse which areas of the city had lagging uptake in vaccinations and that more outreach work would be done in those areas.
