Liverpool's homeless services could be limited because of rocketing demand

Liverpool's homelessness services could soon have to put limits on who can access help because of an increase in people from other parts of the country needing help, the council's housing boss has warned.

The city's provision for homeless people is more extensive than what's offered by many other local authorities throughout the country.

Its services, anchored by the Always Room Inside campaign and the Labre House night hub for rough sleepers, do not have any barriers to access.

But housing boss Lynnie Hinnigan told a select committee earlier this week that the city regularly helped people who came from other towns and cities as well, putting its already stretched services under increasing pressure.

Councillor Hinnigan said: "Twenty seven percent of people living in Labre have no recourse to benefits and that is increasing by two percent a month.

"When do we have Always Room Inside? Does that stop when we have people coming from Chester and Manchester?

"We need to look at it and see whether we need another solution going forward and whether we can continue that offer for everyone with no recourse to benefits."

Councillor Hinnigan said she remained completely committed to the council's support for homeless people.

The issue of rough sleeping and homelessness has increased in recent years, and Mayor Joe Anderson has been vocal in blaming cuts to public services.

The past year has also seen public anger about the issue grow after a series of deaths of homeless people on the city's streets.
