Liverpool release statement on Man United clash postponement

Liverpool have released a statement after their game against Manchester United was postponed.

The game at Old Trafford was scheduled for a late afternoon kick-off on Sunday, but supporters descended around the stadium before breaking in and occupying the pitch - the game was instantly in jeopardy from that moment.

After the European Super League plans collapsed, fans have refused to forget the betrayal and Sunday's demonstrations were just the latest - mostly peaceful - protests against the Glazers' ownership of the Reds.

United released a club statement after the game was officially postponed and now Liverpool have also commented on the unsettling scenes, offering their "full agreement" to the decision.

"Liverpool Football Club was in full agreement with the decision to postpone today’s fixture as a result of ongoing events at Old Trafford and the surrounding area," the statement read.

"It is our position that public safety must be the number one factor in any such decision, with the ability to provide a secure environment for the participants, staff and officials being a particular priority.

"It was clearly not possible for this to be guaranteed today due to a situation which escalated rapidly.

"We will continue to have dialogue with Manchester United, the Premier League and the local authorities to find a suitable date to reschedule. As soon as we have this information we will update our supporters accordingly."
