Liverpool 'player ratings' vs Tranmere Rovers after late goal seals another EFL Trophy defeat

Vitezslav Jaros

Decent stop from Macdonald first half and alert to clear from Woolery near the edge of his area. Handled confidently after the interval, and no chance with any of the Tranmere goals.

Abdi Sharif

Pace allowed him to cover as Tranmere pumped long in the opening stages. Found space going forward in the second half. Subbed.

Sepp van den Berg

Some uncertain steps in the opening moments but settled and was the clear leader of the defensive line. Good tackles as Tranmere threatened and made a huge difference.

Tom Clayton

Struggled early on under the high ball as Tranmere went long, but gradually worked his way into the game. Didn’t allow himself to be bullied as the home side began to put it about.

Owen Beck

Read a number of situations well and always looked to offer himself as an attacking option. Didn’t think twice about putting himself in where it hurts. Lively.

Leighton Clarkson

Close with one shot from range first half and helped the young Reds gain control with his probing passing. Kept the visitors ticking over in the second half.

Elijah Dixon-Bonner

Lively in finding positions but wasn’t able to use the ball accurately enough. More careful in possession after the break. Subbed.

Ben Woodburn

Smashed a drive narrowly wide as Liverpool began to dominate, provided energy in midfield and fouled for the opener. Touch let him down after one fine burst into the area.

Jake Cain

Starting on the right of the front three, atoned for missing a glorious chance shortly before the break by curling in a sumptuous 25-yard free-kick for the opener. Grew in confidence as a consequence and helped set up the equaliser.

Luis Longstaff

Pressed well from the front and his touch created the chance for Cain. A greater physical presence up front than against Wigan last week, and deserved his goal for Liverpool’s second. Subbed.

Liam Millar

Kept quiet for large parts of the opening half but came alive with one run and shot that was blocked. Invited to probe with greater regularity after the break and came close to scoring.

Jack Bearne (for Dixon-Bonner 79)

Lively cameo on the flank and played a part in the equaliser.

Conor Bradley (for Sharif 79)

Further experience for the right-back.

Fidel O’Rourke (for Longstaff 88)

Minutes.
