Liverpool pay touching tribute to Man Utd's Marcus Rashford over school meals campaign

Liverpool have put bitter club rivalries to one side to pay a touching tribute to Man Utd forward Marcus Rashford following his successful campaign for free school meals.

There is no love lost between the two clubs, and not so long ago Rashford even grabbed a brace at Old Trafford to earn all three points for United against their old foes.

But what the 22-year-old has achieved in the past week has transcended football, by ensuring over a million children will not go hungry throughout the summer holidays.

His campaign urged the Government to reverse their original decision to stop providing meals at the end of term.

Now Liverpool have praised the forward for his remarkable efforts in bringing positive change to their own community.

Retweeting a post by Man Utd describing their striker as a "hero and inspiration," Liverpool wrote in their Twitter post: "Children in our region will benefit because of the actions of this remarkable role model.

"From Liverpool With Love."

Fans were quick to comment on the post with their support for Rashford's work.

One wrote: "This is more than football. Class."

While another said: "Hunger doesn't wear club colours."

Rashford's initial pleas for the Government to make a U-turn had been knocked back, after the Department of Education responded to his open letter stating they would not be extending the free school meals into the summer months.

The United and England star came from a disadvantaged background himself, and insisted he would not give up with his campaign.

On Tuesday he succeeded with his aims, as the Government announced plans for a £120m Covid food fund to help the families in need of support.

"I don’t even know what to say," Rashford tweeted after hearing of the announcement. "Just look at what we can do when we come together, THIS is England in 2020."

Rashford has already worked tirelessly to deliver meals to school children at their own homes during lockdown, teaming up with charity Fare Share to raise more than £20million in food donations.

Following his initial reaction, Rashford later addressed MPs who helped push through the campaign, stating "this was never about me or you."

"I stand proud today knowing that we have listened, and we have done what is right," he added.

"There is still a long way to go but I am thankful to you all that we have given these families just one less thing to worry about tonight.

"The wellbeing of our children should ALWAYS be a priority."
