Liverpool news: Pep Guardiola makes Steven Gerrard apology as Cody Gakpo sends message

Liverpool fans had to wait nearly a month-and-a-half for their first Premier League victory of 2023, which made Monday's Merseyside derby triumph that bit sweeter.

Anfield witnessed the Reds secure a much-needed 2-0 win as they swatted aside bitter rivals Everton. Mohamed Salah finished off a ferocious counter attack to give Jurgen Klopp's side a half-time advantage, before Cody Gakpo netted a simple tap-in for his first Liverpool goal.

Klopp was back fist-pumping in front of the Kop after academy prodigy Stefan Bajcetic produced a superb performance at the heart of the Reds' midfield. Supporters liked what they saw on the pitch and there's plenty of news to catch up on off it.

Here's a round-up of the latest news from Anfield.

Guardiola apologises to Gerrard

Pep Guardiola began his press conference ahead of one of the biggest Premier League games of the season by apologising to Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard. The grovelling Manchester City boss, who's preparing to face table toppers Arsenal on Wednesday in a mouth-watering clash, had asked last week whether it was the Citizens' fault that Gerrard had infamously slipped in the 2014 title race.

Before any reporter was given the floor to ask a question, Guardiola - whose club face the prospect of being stripped of three league titles, including 2014's, due being hit with 100 financial charges by the Premier League - began by saying: "I apologise to Steven Gerrard for my unnecessary and stupid comments I said last time about him. He knows how I admire him and his career, what he has done for this country where I'm living and training."

Cody sends Klopp message over new position

Cody Gakpo has told Jurgen Klopp that he's happy to take up a false nine position after it worked a treat against Everton. Playing as a withdrawn striker between team-mates Mohamed Salah and Darwin Nunez, a role which he's also played for the Dutch national team, the 23-year-old forward scored his first goal in a Liverpool shirt following his £37million transfer from PSV Eindhoven in January.

"Obviously I played a few games in the centre and more like a false nine to be involved in the build up, try and be involved in the build up, and from there go forward," Gakpo explained to Sky Sports. "It's another role than I'm used to, but it's good for me to improve the position and keep working."

Liverpool respond to UEFA report

Liverpool have urged UEFA to implement all of the 21 critical recommendations which an independent panel suggested after investigating last season's chaotic Champions League final. After a damning report was published on Monday evening, eight months on from the traumatic events at the Stade de France in Paris, it was found that UEFA's poor organisation, coupled with the lack of a stadium risk assessment from French authorities, "almost led to a disaster."

The club noted in a lengthy statement: "As a football club with proud history in Europe, we call on UEFA to do the right thing and implement the 21 recommendations to ensure the safety of all football supporters attending any future UEFA football match."
