Liverpool news: Jurgen Klopp singles out four players after being left with head in hands

Liverpool suffered another miserable defeat as they were thrashed 4-1 at the hands of Manchester City.

Mohamed Salah gave the Reds the lead at the Etihad as they aimed to take a big step towards the Premier League top four. But Jack Grealish was instrumental in a City resurgence as Klopp's men proved no match for Pep Guardiola's title-challenging side.

It leaves Liverpool needing to regroup with two huge games against Chelsea and Arsenal in the next week. Here's a look at all the latest headlines from Anfield after Saturday's disappointing game.

Klopp left with head in hands

Jurgen Klopp was left with his head in his hands as he watched Andy Robertson leave Liverpool's defence exposed before Julian Alvarez's equaliser.

Robertson pressed aggressively as Kevin de Bruyne received the ball on the halfway line but did not get there in time as the Belgian fed the ball on to Riyad Mahrez out wide. The Scot left a gaping hole as Manchester City exposed the space to work the ball into Alvarez in the box to slot beyond Alisson and restore parity in the game.

As soon as Robertson pressed De Bruyne, the nearby Klopp could be seen with his head in his hands on the touchline before making his unhappiness clear. And Reds legend Jamie Carragher shared similar frustrations watching on as he tweeted criticising Robertson for repeating a mistake he has made many times before - including in the Champions League final.

Carragher wrote: "Andy Robertson goes chasing into midfield & leaves his man, it happens a lot. (CL final). You can’t always press!"

Only four stars did "OK"

Jurgen Klopp could only pick out four Liverpool players who did "OK" in their "unacceptable" 4-1 thrashing away to Manchester City.

Despite taking a first-half lead, the Reds crumbled in the second period and suffered yet another defeat away from home in what's been a torrid season. Post-match, Klopp issued a scathing assessment of his team's display and named Alisson Becker, Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Cody Gakpo as the only stars who put in respectable performances - not even goalscorer Mohamed Salah.

"About four performances were OK," the Liverpool manager, who's been used to battling City for the Premier League title but is now focussed on merely achieving a top-four finish, bemoaned. "The two midfielders, Hendo and Fab, worked a lot to try to close gaps. Cody, especially in possession, and Ali of course. That is very difficult if you want to get something from here."

Arthur Melo shook Pep Guardiola's hand after Man City equalised vs Liverpool (BT Sport)

Arthur spotted shaking Guardiola's hand

Liverpool substitute Arthur Melo bizarrely shook hands with Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola as the Spaniard celebrated his side's opening goal in their thrashing of the Reds.

Guardiola first turned to Kostas Tsimikas, putting his hand out looking for a high-five, though the Greek defender ignored him. The City boss instead gave him a quick tap on the chest before moving on to Arthur.

He stuck his hand out for a handshake, with the Reds midfielder duly obliging as he smiled and joked with Guardiola. After Arthur had walked past, Guardiola turned back towards the crowd, though he insisted after the game that he was not being disrespectful.
