Liverpool news: Jamie Carragher makes transfer plea as Mason Mount laughs off links

Liverpool's full attention is now on the summer transfer window, with boss Jurgen Klopp looking to overhaul his underperforming squad.

All eyes are on who the German brings in to boost the Reds' midfield, which proved to be a key weakness during the campaign just gone. But Anfield icon Jamie Carragher believes another area of the squad should be a priority in the upcoming window.

Carragher's plea for a change of focus comes as Caoimhin Kelleher was told to leave Anfield and Reds target Mason Mount laughed off claims a transfer move had been completed. Here, Mirror Football rounds up all the latest Liverpool news.

Carragher makes transfer demand

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has urged boss Jurgen Klopp to move on from veteran defender Joel Matip this summer. The former Reds skipper believes that is time for the centre-back to be replaced on the left side of defence.

“I look at the defence and I think Joel Matip now has got a year to go. If you got £10million, whatever the price may be, it’s probably right to move on. I do think we need a left-sided defender, a left-footed centre-back," Carragher told Redmen Plus.

"A lot of teams have them, we don’t. A left-sided player would add something. If we are going to continue with this formation now, (we should be) buying someone in that area, a centre-back who can do the full-back role.”

Kelleher urged to leave

Allison's back-up Caoimhin Kelleher has been urged to leave Liverpool if he is to get more game time. Kelleher has been unable to supplant the Brazilian in Klopp's starting line-up and Reds legend Mark Lawrenson believes he needs to depart.

“He wasn’t good was he at Southampton? He actually looked really, really rusty but as you rightly say he needs to play. I wonder whether because they’re obviously trying to buy players Liverpool," Lawrenson told Off The Ball.

"They’re talking about him being £20m-odd, whether they might just sell him rather than letting him go out on loan. That will be an interesting one most definitely. You saw him last week and you think, you need to be playing, wherever it is you just need to be playing.”

Mount laughs off transfer links

Liverpool target Mason Mount has laughed off claims that he has signed a deal to join Manchester United. Mount was attending the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday when he was questioned by Martin Brundle on reports he had agreed personal terms with United.

But he clearly did not want to speak on those rumours when Brundle brought it up on his pre-race grid walk. He simply laughed and replied: "I'm here to simply enjoy this race today. It's an amazing day and I can't wait to watch it."

He went on to add: "This is my third race, I went to Monaco and Silverstone last year and this is a good one to come to. I'm with Red Bull so hopefully Max [Verstappen] wins and Lando [Norris] is my mate as well. I'm enjoying it and hoping for a good race."
