Liverpool morning headlines as Jurgen Klopp makes Premier League title claim

Here are your Liverpool morning headlines for Tuesday, May 19.

Liverpool deserve to be champions - Klopp

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp insists his side deserve to be Premier League champions amid talk the 2019/20 season may be declared null and void.

Klopp’s side hold a 25-point lead over second-placed Manchester City and require just two more victories to lift their first league title since 1990.

The German insists that it would be unfair not to declare his team champions after such a dominant domestic campaign.

Klopp told Goal: "There was talk that people wanted to declare the season null and void. So you thought: 'Huh? We have played 76 per cent of the season and you just want to delete the thing?'

"That would have been something that I personally would find unfair, to just say that it didn't happen.

"We are first in the home table, we are first in the away table. It is a season in which we should become champions.

"Dealing with the crisis is the most important thing. But that doesn't mean that certain things are of no importance at all just because they are less important.

"I think there are worse things in life than not becoming champions. A lot of people around us have big problems. People die, it always happens, but at the moment because of a virus that we all didn't know and for which nobody could be prepared.

"We cannot prepare for everything, but also have to react often. That’s the biggest part of my life, reacting to things that I didn’t expect."

Reds fans want Havertz transfer

Liverpool supporters are urging their club to look at the possibility of signing Bayer Leverkusen star Kai Havertz after a virtuoso performance on Monday night.

The 20-year-old netted twice in his side’s win 4-1 at Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga and left many fans of the European champions gushing over his qualities.

However, the German is primarily an attacking midfielder - a position that does not satisfactorily fit into Klopp’s 4-3-3 formation.

There have been suggestions that Havertz could provide competition for Roberto Firmino in a withdrawn position in the front three.

Hope on title presentation

The Premier League intend to hold a title presentation for Liverpool, should they land their first league title since 1990.

Klopp’s side only require two wins from their final 10 matches to put their title success beyond doubt this campaign.

There have been doubts that even if the current league season can be completed, a title presentation may prove problematic but the league insists they will stage one should the health advice allow it to do so.

“If it is at all possible, yes (we will hold one),” Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said. “We would like to have a trophy presentation to give the players and staff the moment they have worked so hard for.

“We would try and do it unless it wasn’t possible because of safety concerns. We are focused on finishing the 2019/20 season, but we also have to plan for all eventualities.”
