Liverpool morning headlines as Jurgen Klopp hails Nat Phillips Premier League debut

Here are your Liverpool morning headlines for Sunday, November 1.

Klopp on double substitution

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has refused to take credit for the match-winning double substitution against West Ham United on Saturday evening at Anfield.

Diogo Jota and Xherdan Shaqiri were introduced in the second half of the Anfield clash, and the pair combined to score the winning goal for the Reds.

"It is not too difficult a decision to bring Diogo and Shaq on because they have trained exceptionally and are in great shape," Klopp explained, as per the Echo .

"Yes, Diogo! He is at the moment, [showing he is] a good player. We are really happy that we could sign Diogo.

"It's win-win, we can help him and he can help us.”

Klopp salutes ‘monster’ Phillips

Nathaniel Phillips put in a Man of the Match performance on his Liverpool Premier League debut against West Ham and he has earned the plaudits of Klopp.

The 23-year-old - who was not chosen for the Champions League squad and was linked to a summer exit - was paired with Joe Gomez in the heart of the defence with Joel Matip, Fabinho and Virgil van Dijk all unavailable.

“The story behind him makes it even more incredible,” Klopp explained, as cited by the Echo . “I’m really pleased for him, he deserves it more than anybody.

"He's a brilliant guy, smart guy, intelligent, everything. He knows everything about himself as a footballer.

“He kept it really simple tonight, which was important for us.

“He's not easy on the eye, he's not Messi but who cares? In the air, he's a monster! He was incredible.

“He was vocal on the pitch and spoke really well, he made the challenges, he was there and was aggressive. He maybe gave away one foul and played a really good game.”

Souness on Reds record

Liverpool equalled a club record unbeaten home run of 63 matches in the Premier League on Saturday with the win over West Ham.

Pundit Graeme Souness has now compared the current Reds team to their record-equalling 1978-80 equivalents, of which he was a prominent member.

Souness told Sky Sports when asked to compare the two, in quotes carried by the Echo : "Both fantastic. This current Liverpool team has been off the charts in terms of consistency.

"And they play a brand of football which gets you on the edge of your seat. They are not a team that sits in and tries to nick games.

"But when you go through all those stats, the really outstanding one for me is we used 20 players (during the run), they've used 39 players.

"That's how the game has changed. They spread the workload around between twice as many players.

"But it's a fantastic achievement, because you have to be right at it. Liverpool, Man City, Man United... the big teams never have easy games.

"You can bet when the fixtures come out, there will be players all over the country at other teams going: 'That's the one I'm looking forward to'.

"That's where Liverpool are at - certainly during my time in football anyway."
