Liverpool morning headlines as Alex Ferguson proved right about Jurgen Klopp

Here are your Liverpool morning headlines for Thursday, 8 October.

The inside story of how FSG secured Klopp

Today marks the fifth anniversary of Jurgen Klopp’s appointment as manager of Liverpool.

It has been quite a half-decade, with the club collecting their sixth European crown and 19th English league title, as well as becoming champions of the world.

Such riches were a dim and distant dream back in the autumn of 2015. The Reds had endured a tough season in 2014/15, and hadn’t started the following campaign in sparkling form either.

They only won three of their opening eight league matches and suffered bad defeats by West Ham United and Manchester United, so Brendan Rodgers’ time in the Anfield hot seat was inevitably up.

We all know who FSG appointed next, but how did the acquisition of Klopp actually come about? Paul Gorst has the inside story , which includes a remarkable connection between the Liverpool manager and a New York hotel receptionist.

How Klopp’s first press conference laid the foundations

The day after he was appointed as manager of Liverpool, Klopp gave a memorable press conference to discuss what he would bring to the club, and how the Reds would improve going forward.

If there were some sceptical Kopites when he was given the job, the majority will have been won over by his performance that day.

Many of the soundbites from that press conference have entered the lexicon of the club, to sit along the pearls of wisdom dished out by the likes of Bill Shankly. Klopp announced he wanted to turn ‘doubters to believers’, and it’s safe to say he has been successful in doing so.

Ian Doyle has looked at what else was said by Liverpool’s new manager back in 2015 , and whether his claims have come to pass or not.

One United legend proved another wrong

Thanks to the fierce and intense rivalry which exists between the two giants of the northwest, whenever Liverpool or Manchester United make a significant move, the other is sure to sit up and take notice.

So it proved five years ago when Klopp became the new manager of Liverpool. Of the many statements he offered in his first meeting with the media, one in particular has gone down in legend.

The German proclaimed he would win a 'title' in the next four years, else he might wind up managing in Switzerland.

It was too bold a proclamation for Peter Schmeichel. "[Is that Klopp's] First mistake..??" he tweeted at the time. "Others have made the same promise! #ItsNotThatEasyMrKlopp".

The Dane may not have been convinced, but Alex Ferguson certainly was. United’s most successful manager admitted to being worried, and you can see what else he said here .
