Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher reacts as son signs first professional contract after Everton links

Wigan Athletic have confirmed that James Carragher has signed his first professional contract with the club.

Carragher is the son of former Liverpool defender Jamie, and joined the Latics following his release by the Reds as a teenager.

The defender has played a key role in the recent success of Wigan’s youth sides, helping them win the Clarets Cup win during the 2018/19 season, as well as helping the club to the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup a season later.

While the 18-year-old captained the club’s Under-18s to the Professional Development League National title back in May.

Speaking on his deal with the club, Carragher said: “I’m very happy; I signed here when I was an Under-14 and I’ve loved it here.

“From the minute I walked through the door I have thrived and improved as a player, so I can’t wait to carry that on.

“Being the captain last year was a huge honour, especially with the success that we had - we had a brilliant group last season.

“A lot of us are continuing into the next age group, so hopefully we can continue to progress together now as we step up.”

While former Reds defender Carragher commented on Twitter: “Well done son, very proud of you.”

Carragher has already featured for Wigan’s first team and was linked with a move to Everton earlier this summer.

But, as reported by the ECHO last month, Everton's hopes of signing the youngster faded as they were unable to agree a fee with Wigan.
