Liverpool learn FIFA Club World Cup semi-final opponents

Liverpool will play Mexican side Monterrey in their FIFA Club World Cup semi-final next week.

The four-times Mexican champions beat Qatar's own Al-Sadd 3-2 in Doha on Saturday to set up a meeting with Jurgen Klopp's six-times champions of Europe on Wednesday.

Monterrey took the lead on 23 minutes with a thunderous strike from left-back Leonel Vangioni before Rogelio Funes Mori - twin brother of former Everton defender Ramiro Funes Mori - doubled their advantage just before first-half.

Al-Sadd, managed by former Barcelona star Xavi, pulled a goal back through Baghdad Bounedjah on 66 minutes before Carlos Rodriguez restored Monterrey's two-goal advantage with thirteen minutes remaining.

Abdelkarim Hassan pulled another back for the Qataris with a minute left but Monterrey hung on to book their place in the semis.

Al-Sadd will take on Esperance Sportive de Tunis in the fifth-place play-off on Tuesday afternoon (2.30pm GMT) before the first semi-final takes place later that evening (5.30pm GMT) between Brazil's Flamengo and Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal.

Liverpool and Monterrey will go head-to-head for a place in next Saturday evening's final at 5.30pm GMT on Wednesday.
