Liverpool Labour deputy mayor and key cabinet member to quit council

Liverpool Council's deputy mayor and a key cabinet member are set to quit the authority, the ECHO can reveal.

Environment chief and Labour Clubmoor Councillor James Noakes and Old Swan Labour councillor Gary Millar - one of Joe Anderson's three Deputy Mayors - will not seek re-election as councillors when their current terms come to an end next May.

This is also the case for Labour Princes Park Councillor Tim Moore - who will end his 12-year stay on the council at next year's local elections.

All three elected members have served on the city council since 2008 - and have not submitted an application for re-selection ahead of interviews next month.

It is widely believed that a large number of new Labour members, many of who joined after Jeremy Corbyn became party leader, will become candidates for council seats in 2020.

The number of left-wing Corbyn-loyal elected members was significantly boosted at this year's council elections - after a year of eventful and often bitter selection campaigns.

Cllr Noakes' decision to step away from the council comes just 13 months after he was promoted to the key cabinet position of member for city services when incumbent Steve Munby quit his post.

He has been the face of the council's controversial decision to create a new bus hub in the Old Haymarket area of the city centre - work on which started today.

He said his decision to walk away from the council was a personal one.

He said: "This is a decision I have made for personal reasons and is something I have thought about for some time.

"I am grateful for the support of family, friends and colleagues and especially for the brilliant residents of clubmoor."

Cllr Millar was initially elected as a Liberal Democrat councillor in Old Swan in 2008.

But he defected to the Labour Party in 2011 and was quickly made an assistant cabinet member.

Last year, after the dramatic departures of Deputy and Assistant Mayors Ann O'Byrne and Nick Small, Mayor Anderson made Cllr Millar one of his new-look team of Deputy Mayors alongside Wendy Simon and Lynnie Hinnigan.

But he said his decision to leave the council was made a long time ago.

He told the ECHO : "It's a decision that I actually made at my election four years ago.

"I was going to stand down but Joe Anderson, Peter Brennan and Joanne Calvert convinced me to stay on.

"I think 12 years as a councillor is enough for most people and its time to bring along someone new to take up the mantle."

He added: "I have had a fantastic time and I love Old Swan - but I don't think politics should be your whole life."

Cllr Moore said he was also walking away for personal reasons.
