Liverpool injury news and expected return dates as Joel Matip update provided

Liverpool’s perfect start to the season was ended on Thursday night, as they were beaten on penalties by Arsenal.

A much-changed Liverpool squad were dumped out of the Carabao Cup after only managing a 0-0 draw in the 90 minutes.

On Sunday, Jurgen Klopp’s side will play their sixth game in three weeks to kick off their season, looking to continue their 100% start to their title defence.

It’s their last game before the international break and the Merseyside derby later this month.

So here’s the latest injury news ahead of Aston Villa on Sunday and then Everton at Goodison Park after the two-week break:

Thiago Alcantara

Injury: Covid-19

After impressing on his debut against Chelsea, Thiago was expected to start in the league game agaist the Gunners.

However, it emerged he would miss that on Monday night, with manager Klopp coy on the reason for his absence.

On Tuesday, the club confirmed he had tested positive for coronavirus and would now undergo a period of self-isolation.

First-team doctor, Dr Jim Moxon said: "It is the choice of each individual whether they reveal publicly the outcome of a Covid-19 test.

"We have followed all the protocols to the letter and Thiago is OK.

"He will be self-isolating now as per the guidelines and hopefully he'll be back with us soon."

Based on the dates, as long as his recovery goes smoothly, he could be available to rejoin training after the conclusion of the international break.

Jordan Henderson

Injury: Thigh

The Liverpool skipper was taken off during the win at Stamford Bridge, missing both of the clashes with Arsenal.

Speaking ahead of the cup tie, Klopp’s assistant Pep Ljinders revealed they would assess his progress ahead of Villa this weekend.

He said: "Jordan, we will re-evaluate on Friday after this game to see if he can be ready for Aston Villa.”

Joel Matip

Injury: Muscular

Matip has yet to play this season, but could provide Klopp with another boost, as he targets a return against the Toffees.

On Thursday Klopp revealed the following update: "We don't have too many choices right now in defence. Joel will be back after the international break which is really good, then we have the full orchestra again.”

That backed up Ljinders assessment before the game, when he said: "Joel [Matip] is the same as what I said last week, he will be ready [after] the international break and use the time to prepare the Everton  game."

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Injury: Knee

The former Arsenal man missed both games against his former side as he continues his recovery from an injury picked up in pre-season.

Liverpool have confirmed that while his recovery to full fitness is going well, he won’t be rushed backed into the starting XI.

"Ox is progressing well," Lijnders said of Oxlade-Chamberlain. "He's in a good way and it's really important for him that this first phase goes smooth.

"But, of course, that takes a much longer time.”

Kostas Tsimikas

Injury: Thigh

Klopp’s first summer signing impressed against Lincoln City, but it was discovered following the game he had picked up a muscular injury.

That has kep him out of the last two and will also see him sidelined for the game at Villa Park. He could be another that returns following the international break, which is coming at a good time for Klopp’s depleted squad.
