Liverpool infections drop by a third as city hits vaccine milestone

Liverpool’s coronavirus cases continued their fall this week, with cases dropping by a third.

Liverpool Council’s latest coronavirus report states that the city recorded 863 cases in the seven days up to February 16, giving an infection rate of 173.3 cases per 100,000 people.

A week earlier, the city had recorded 1234 cases over the previous seven days and its infection rate was 247.8 cases per 100,000 people.

Across the city, infection rates vary widely, with 57.2 cases per 100,000 in Greenbank up to 374.7 cases per 100,000 in Fazakerley.

The report said that just under 20% of the cases identified in the city over the week were found through the Lateral Flow Testing currently being aimed at workers who cannot work from home during the lockdown.

It said:“Of the 863 confirmed cases in the last 7 days, 163 (18.9%) were detected using Lateral Flow Testing (LFT) kits.

“The majority of cases (49%) were in those aged under 40 years, whereas 33% cases were in those aged 40-59 yrs. Of all the confirmed cases in the last seven days 50% were female and 50% were male. Of those cases where ethnicity was given, 84% people were recorded as White British and 16% people were from a BAME** background.

“Compared to the previous week the rate of new infections in the city has slightly decreased, however the 7 day rate remains very high.

“The wards with the largest number of confirmed cases are Fazakerley (61 cases), Speke-Garston (57 cases), Clubmoor (38 cases), Warbreck (35 cases), Belle Vale (34 cases), Norris Green (34 cases), Princes Park (33 cases), Kensington and Fairfield (33 cases), Picton (31 cases) and Kirkdale (31 cases).”

The continued fall in cases comes as the city passed 100,000 coronavirus jabs administered and in a week where coronavirus hospitalisations continued to drop.

Earlier this week, the number of Covid patients in Liverpool University Hospital Trust, which runs the Royal, Aintree and Broadgreen, was just over 300, compared with 550 at the end of January.

However, leaders in the council and the NHS have warned the government not to ease restrictions to quickly in the city, warning that doing so could easily result in another spike in cases and deaths.

The Prime Minister is due to lay out his plan to exit lockdown early next week, with school reopenings expected to be the first major step in the easing of restrictions.
