After going a goal down against Chelsea, Liverpool drew level courtesy of a Mohamed Salah penalty.
Following a goal-mouth scramble, Sadio Mane was able to direct an effort towards goal, which was seemingly 'blocked' with a hand on the line by Reece James.
After a VAR review, the penalty was eventually given, with referee Anthony Taylor deeming James to have made a clear and obvious attempt - despite the ball initially bouncing off his knee - to prevent the ball going over the line by moving his arm towards it.
Whilst many admitted that they did indeed think it was a penalty, some also suggested that they didn't think it was a red card offence.
Speaking on Twitter, Gary Lineker stated: "Penalty yes, but red card? Not for me. Came off his thigh first."
Despite Lineker believing that James should've remained on the pitch, the law suggests that if a player denies an obvious goalscoring opportunity, then they should be sent off - regardless of whether they meant to or not.
The definition states: "Where a player denies the opposing team a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity by a handball offence the player is sent off wherever the offence occur."
Considering the official definition of 'denying a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity', James was rightly sent off for his hand ball.
