Liverpool handed major injury boost as Jordan Henderson England decision made

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has been added to England's squad for the upcoming Nations League games against Italy and Germany, despite missing the Reds' last three matches through injury.

Henderson, 32, suffered a hamstring injury midway through the second-half of the 2-1 win over Newcastle United in August and subsequently missed the fixtures against Everton, Napoli and Ajax for Jurgen Klopp's side.

However, it has now been confirmed that Henderson joined up with the Three Lions squad at their St George's Park training base on Monday evening after passing a number of fitness tests, just days after Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips withdrew from the squad due to an ongoing shoulder problem.

Despite Henderson's injury initially being described as "not good" by his manager on August 31, it has healed quicker than anticipated and the midfielder could have been named in Liverpool's squad for Sunday's game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge had it not been postponed, according to the Mail's Dom King.

It will be a welcome boost for Klopp, who has suffered a number of injuries in the midfield department during the opening weeks of the season. However, with Henderson now joining Thiago Alcantara in returning to full fitness, the Reds manager could be able to name his 'first choice' trio of Fabinho, Henderson and Thiago for just the second time this season when Brighton travel to Anfield on October 1.

For Henderson, this month's international camp is the final opportunity to impress Gareth Southgate before the England manager names his 26-man squad for the World Cup in Qatar later this year. Although Henderson should have no concerns over his place in the squad, the Liverpool skipper will no doubt be keen to make up for lost time and cement himself in Southgate's strongest XI - with Phillips a potential doubt with injury and West Ham United's Declan Rice struggling for form so far this season.

England face Italy at the San Siro on Friday before hosting Germany at Wembley next Monday.
