Liverpool GP suspended after Twitter row

A Liverpool GP who was involved in a Twitter row about the rights of transgender people had his registration suspended for one month.

Dr Adrian Harrop, 31, who is based at Brownlow Health Central in Liverpool, was brought before a tribunal after he became involved in an online row about transgender issues.

The Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) suspended Mr Harrop's registration for one month at the conclusion of a hearing into his case.

Dr Harrop's registration was suspended after he was found to have been responsible for a number of tweets that were deemed "offensive" and "inappropriate".

MPTS tribunal chair Nicholas Flanagan said: "The allegation that has led to Dr Harrop’s hearing can be summarised as concerns relating to his use of the social media platform Twitter, where he publicly represented himself as a registered UK doctor.

"It is alleged that between 10 May 2018 – 29 September 2020, Dr Harrop used his Twitter account to engage in posting inappropriate tweets which were offensive and/or insulting and/or inappropriate in nature.

"It is also alleged that in some of his tweets, Dr Harrop sought to share other individuals’ personal information, intimidate three people and carried out a campaign of cyber bullying in respect of one person. It is alleged that these actions were motivated, in whole or in part, by Dr Harrop’s knowledge that these persons held different views to him on transgender issues.

"In his referral to the GMC (General Medical Council) Dr Cooper stated that if any individuals who read Dr Harrop’s tweets happened to come into contact with him in a clinical setting, they might feel they could not trust Dr Harrop if they had divergent views to his in the transgender rights debate."

Dr Harrop admitted posting offensive comments about people who opposed his views.

Dr Harrop, who studied at the University of Manchester, qualified as a GP in September 2019. He has worked as a salaried GP at Brownlow Surgery since October 2019.

He has worked for CMAGIC (Cheshire & Merseyside Gender Identity Collaborative) as a GP with a Special Interest in Gender Affirmative Healthcare.

Dr Harrop released a statement after the hearing, which said: “I am not transgender myself but I am a fervent supporter of transgender rights.”

The tribunal found that Dr Harrop’s misconduct had impaired his fitness to practice and suspended his registration for a month.
