Liverpool financial blow as fears contract clause won't be triggered this transfer window

Liverpool need cash if they're to make any new signings this summer transfer window.

The Reds have felt the full force of the coronavirus pandemic and the world has already witnessed first hand the impact this has had on the club's transfer dealings.

Timo Werner was expected to join Liverpool this summer but the Reds couldn't find the funds in time, meaning he completed a £50million transfer to Chelsea instead.

Liverpool recently sold centre-back Dejan Lovren for £11m, which has helped raise some funds, but if they are going to have any chance of snapping up a target like £36m-rated Thiago Alcantara, the Reds need to make more money.

Back in 2016 Liverpool sold Luis Alberto to Lazio for a measly £4.3m.

But the Reds didn't just cut all ties with the Spaniard, who was 23 at the time.

Liverpool chief Michael Edwards ensured a hefty sell-on clause of 30 per cent was included in the deal, meaning the Reds would be in line to profit should Alberto's stock rise.

And as luck would have it, this is exactly what has happened.

The midfielder who previously couldn't generate a fee of £5m is now valued at around £70m - and what's more, he has a host of suitors.

Should Lazio sell the midfielder for this price then Liverpool would be set to inherit around £20m, putting them in a much better financial position.

But, there's a problem.

According to recent reports from Italy, Alberto isn't interested in leaving Lazio just yet, and much to the relief of the Serie A, is set to sign a contract extension.

Reports claim the midfielder will bag a deal worth £2.4m per season plus bonuses, and will remain in Rome until at least 2025.
