Liverpool fans vote on Gareth Bale transfer - and result is embarrassing for him

Gareth Bale's future is still up in the air, although it seems as though the player himself wants to stay at Real Madrid .

On Wednesday, Spanish publication AS reported that "a source close to the player" was insisting that the Welshman won't be moving anywhere this summer , and instead he was determined to stay and ride out the rockiest period of his La Liga career.

Bale was an unused substitute as Real brought the curtain down on a disappointing season at the weekend with a miserable 2-0 home defeat to Real Betis.

After the game, Bale's boss Zinedine Zidane appeared to suggest that the former Tottenham man doesn't have a future at the club.

"It is true, I did not [bring Bale on]. If I had another substitute to make, I would not have done anything different," said the Frenchman.

"But I have to look at the day-to-day, and make decisions. And when there is something I do not like, or does not fit for me, I must do what I think best. It might be difficult for the player.

"We cannot forget all he has done here, but I must live in the present, think of the future. We will see [if Bale continues]. I don't know what will happen, truthfully."

Bale has most notably been linked with a return to the Premier League, with Manchester United and former club Tottenham believed to both be interested in signing him.

Liverpool , too, were tentatively linked with a move for Wales' all-time top goalscorer in the Spanish press, and that led to our friends at the Liverpool Echo running an online poll over whether or not Reds fans wanted to sign him.

And Bale wouldn't have liked the results.

With fans citing issues over Bale's wages and fitness issues, some 66 per cent of the over 24,000 supporters who voted said 'No' in the poll, with 34 per cent saying yes.

Such a move has always seemed unlikely anyway, but it seems as though plenty of fans don't want it to happen.
